Statement of Purpose

The 21st century witnessed the transition from telephones and bulky computers to modern day mobile computing devices that can fit inside pockets. Curiosity towards wireless technologies and powerful processors running with very little power encouraged me to take up projects in that domain and tackle the challenges it presented.

I did my schooling from [SCHOOL_NAME], securing 84.8% in the Class XII. My time here inculcated leadership skills in me as I would participate in various inhouse and regional competitions. It was here that I realized that Engineering would be my chosen field and would allow me to explore my interests and use them to develop technology for practical purposes. Thus, I graduated in B.E (Electronics and Communication Engineering) in the year 2021 with 77.9% from [COLLEGE_NAME] which is affiliated to [UNIVERSITY_NAME].

Choosing to study Electronics and Communication Engineering was the result of my interest in wireless communication, and semiconductor technologies incorporated with Artificial Intelligence (AI). My undergraduate studies were deeply rewarding experiences during which I took part in various industrial training programs. My college has given me many opportunities and challenging projects to work on. These helped me develop good technical and leadership skills and enabled me to work both independently, and as a part of a team.

One project, the "Solar-powered Smart Irrigation System" dealt with capacitive moisture sensors spread across the farm that automatically sense the moisture content in the soil and gives scheduled pulses to Arduino Uno (controller) wirelessly through Bluetooth. Based on the predefined plant requirements, and the moisture threshold, the motor selectively irrigates the specified zone. This reduces the burden of frequent watering of large farms and reduces water wastage. The major drawback was the implementation of Bluetooth (v.4.2) which needed several master nodes to operate while operating large farms with the alternatives being priced too high for farmers to afford. Since India is a global agricultural powerhouse and accounts for the employment of more than 50% of the population, I chose this project as it has the capacity to help many farmers.

Another project, "Performance Analysis of Distributed Spatial Multiplexing with Multi-hop Amplify and Forward Relaying in Wireless Networks" used Distributed Spatial Network by implementing Amplify and Forward relaying through which people can communicate using significantly less energy by multiple hops rather than a single long-haul signal which requires large carrier band. This will not just reduce energy usage, but will significantly increase the SNR ratio due to multiple inputs at the receiver from several nodes, thus decreasing the Bit Error rate. The problem is the lack of nodes in waterbodies and inhabited regions which ends the connection.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I volunteered with local NGOs to provide food and groceries to the needy as most markets and shops remained close. During this time, I took up a 6-month course in basics of AI, which helped me implement a small system to detect people without masks in public place, thus helping the community to identify those who were most likely to spread the virus. I am attracted to AI since it can complete multiple cumbersome tasks with, provided sufficient availability of data. For AI to work efficiently it requires high end computing devices which are costly and rely on stable internet connectivity to run on cloud.

My internship at [COMPANY_NAME] gave me the exposure to the industry-level development and testing equipment being used in missiles. Due to the confidential nature of work, we were given projects which did not disclose any pivotal information to the public. "Health Monitoring System of a Missile" was the project given to us, and we had to develop a simple system that monitors the humidity, temperature, and vibrations inside the enclosure. Challenges included using minimal power to make it sustain for long periods of time without human intervention.

[UNIVERSITY_NAME] is a multi-campus university, committed to providing international students with best facilities and environment. Graduates from the US are among the best researchers in their respective disciplines, thus universities there have created and nurtured an environment conducive to academic growth. The universities' engagement with communities, industries, and businesses enables them to provide learning experiences, and industrial exposure vital for a student's transition to the professional sphere. They provide the right mix of theoretical knowledge and practical experience to ensure that the students are ready to be employed. Each program is monitored and upgraded to ensure it stays relevant, and in tune with the latest industry practices.

The facilities provided by the university and its expert faculty will provide a perfect environment for me to focus on the meaningful research. After completion Master of Science in Robotics and Autonomous Systems (Artificial Intelligence), I am confident that I will be ready to implement the required technical skills in my field to gain practical experience. I plan to work on small-scale industries back in India, thus fully utilising the skills and knowledge I have gained in serving my nation and being a responsible global citizen.
