SOP Sample for MS Electrical & Computer Engineering in Canada
Sample Statement of Purpose for MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering with AI specialization for Canada study permit applicants.
Statement of Purpose, [UNIVERSITY]
[APPLICANT NAME]
I have always believed in the word 'RISE'; by challenging conventions and thinking alternatively to shape the future as we have desired. In many ways, exotic and science fiction stuff like the Iron Man's Arc Reactor, the Ant Man's Quantum tunnel, and the Schrodinger's cat seem to be inspiring many of my dreams and plans on research and career lately. Throughout the last six years from my undergraduate coursework to the IT exposure with the world's renowned IT firm, projects and learning the intricacies of Software with DevOps and Agile methodology for clients like [COMPANY] have exposed me to the stunning world of the Information Age. I'm up closer into Applied Sciences and its possibilities in various industries and realms of life now than I was ever. And at the right time too, I believe.
# My Interest Areas
I am suddenly so seized by some of the questions that touch the cutting edge of science, and the raw nerve of technology, both for Automation & Application Development from chip architecture to mobile applications. Would the Apollo Mission be possible without the advent of a Software program? How easy would life be if everything is automated and can be controlled by just an application on the phone? It's fascinating how computing is simplified and all information is stored in the computer using binary digits 0 and 1. All the processes being automated using controllers, counters, timers and flip flops. Our daily lives seem built on the languages of programmers. We furnish, clothe, and feed ourselves by going online often with help of recommended algorithms which is an amalgam of AI and Machine Learning which even makes our cars run on code as much as fuel with the help of automation. And chances are, you are reading this on a device whose lifeblood is software.
But there are hundreds of brilliant products, technologies, ideas and applications like those in IoT and AI-led automation that are in incubation. A lot of concept technologies still can't hit the roads because of the paucity of the right application model. Moving research from the lab bench to the market shelf is a huge challenge, and one of my MS motivations is to contribute to how software and technology research can be transferred from academic labs to the private sector for the benefit of society, industry and economic competitiveness at large.
During my MS therefore, besides seeking to deepen my understanding of and explore and research further on the software development and testing, I also aim at obtaining cross-disciplinary knowledge of the cutting-edge technology in machine learning and AI based automation.
# My Career Thought
My fascination towards Electronics and its related areas from childhood had intrigued me to opt for Electronic and Communication as my undergraduate course. I did my Undergraduate from [UNIVERSITY], [CITY] with distinction. The program has exposed me to stimulating academia which not only helped me build a solid foundation of Electronics and Communication Engineering fundamentals but also made me conceptually sound in the vast field of both Computers and Electronics. I have applied my knowledge attained during my bachelors and worked as a Software Engineer in a leading MNC for more than two years serving clients like [COMPANY] where I got to interact with the developers with vast experience and knowledge.
My MS is therefore my first serious effort at preparing myself for a career in developing, designing and engineering smarter softwares and applications that will power the next generation of applications in diverse fields ranging from quantum computing, robotics, healthcare, entertainment to automation, governance, space and manufacturing. I want to complete my graduate coursework in Software Development and work with promising Internet-related services and products companies like [COMPANY], [COMPANY], [COMPANY], [COMPANY], [COMPANY], [COMPANY] and finally, within the next 8-10 years I wish to have my own startup.
More specifically, my short-term and long-term career plans, therefore, relate to research, development, innovation and reaching out to the young to train them and to prepare them for innovation and entrepreneurship - and I should keep inventing. In the long term, as I said above, I want to create my own tech-innovation studio to breed new technologies and designs. I want my studio to develop path-breaking "design" and "application" products that can be sustainable like the Centennial Light to drive an entirely new generation of convenience-convergence, which is affordable.
# My Readiness
I am aware of the intellectual demands and knowledge pre-requisites of a rigorous Master's in computer and software systems from an institution like [UNIVERSITY]. However, I would like to believe that the courses I have studied, my academic achievements, my practical and lab skills, my understanding of the basics of other connecting disciplines - these together do stand by me and give me the confidence that I will be able to do well and make the most of the learning opportunities offered in the program. Besides being strong in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering Mathematics and programming, I have done very well in all my courses - Electrical circuits; Switching Theory and Logic Design; Principles of Electrical Engineering; VLSI Design; Digital Signal processing; MATLAB; Digital Communication; Digital Image processing and Cellular And Mobile Communication, VLSI Design tools and technologies and Microelectronics among others.
I have also kept learning outside the curriculum to expand my intellectual readiness for advanced studies in cross-disciplinary areas and also develop advanced skills in the embedded systems field. I am familiar with programming languages like C, Java, MATLAB, PHP, Python and HDL which helped me understand and develop algorithms which are required for programming any embedded system. I've undergone two modules of CCNA and achieved student level credentials for completing Introduction to Networks and CCNA Routing and Switching Essentials. I have acquired the knowledge and skills necessary to build and maintain digital networks.
I'm an awardee of the Prime Minister Scholarship Scheme (PMSS) during my bachelors and have even been awarded the first prize for my project on Bluetooth Operated Home Appliances during the National Science Day Celebration conducted in the first year of engineering. I have worked on projects as simple as metal detectors using proximity sensors to complex projects like VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP) which is a Cisco-proprietary link protocol that provides a means by which Cisco switches can exchange VLAN configuration information. I have also undergone a rigorous internship with [COMPANY] and have got an industrial exposure with specific knowledge on Industrial Automation and Process Control engineering. I got to work on PASolutions which is a [COMPANY] proprietary tool which uses Agile System Design Principles and was also given an opportunity to work on UWeb and transform it from the traditional usage of PHP to Python for generating reports and also worked Human Machine Interface (HMI) system for plant monitoring and control.
In terms of academic interaction and leadership, I have been very passionately active on multiple platforms including IEEE; IEEE (Signal Processing Society (SPS) Chapter); IETE; ARM CORTEX; CYPRESS and IUCEE SPEED, besides be a regular participant/organizer of CISCO events in the campus.
# My Choice of [UNIVERSITY]
In my quest to Develop and Rise, I believe an MS is probably the best way to prepare myself and I do not see strong enough reasons to not do it now. Institute for Computing, Information and Cognitive Systems (ICICS), Centre for Artificial Intelligence Decision-making and Action (CAIDA), Quantum Computing Research Cluster are among the most important draws for me at [UNIVERSITY], besides of course my fond imagination, that I will also have access to the CAIDA to develop analyze and apply AI systems. I checked out [PROFESSOR NAME] works, for instance in his publication on Dynamic Warp Formation and Scheduling for Efficient GPU Control Flow, and it instantly connected with me. With the help of teachers like him at [UNIVERSITY], I definitely want to take my knowledge in computer architecture and embedded systems to more advanced level and I am sure the combination of curricula, teaching, teachers and lab facilities will help me get ready for contributing to the efforts being made to revolutionize microelectronics through blending electronics, electrical and computer engineering and apply it in real world applications.
[UNIVERSITY]'s MASc in Electrical and Computer Engineering Curriculum not only addresses the state-of-the-art in the theoretical dimensions of computer architecture, AI and connected disciplines, but also builds foundational skills across the breadth of the entire realm of the micro computers field. I feel that after my masters, I will emerge intellectually richer in aspects related to design and development of electronic building blocks of digital systems that underlie modern technologies like IoT, AR, VR and unsupervised learning systems that will become the future of telecommunication. I want to use these leanings to develop myself into systems design researcher.
As a future researcher, I almost instinctively try to find out about teachers in a university. On this score, the faculty base at [UNIVERSITY] is a marquee in itself. Besides [PROFESSOR NAME], [PROFESSOR NAME], Human Communication Technologies; [PROFESSOR NAME], VLSI design and testing; [PROFESSOR NAME], Emerging Micro/Nano Technologies; [PROFESSOR NAME], Computer architecture; [PROFESSOR NAME], Communication System; [PROFESSOR NAME], Operating Systems are the more prominent ones I would really look forward to want to learn by assisting them in their consulting, research and teaching work. I feel the [UNIVERSITY] program, environment and facilities really have everything to whet my interest across a wide spectrum of applied aspects of microelectronics, embedded systems, electrical engineering, information science and their applications. I really look forward to being on the program next fall.
