STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Course and University Selection

I am applying for a Master's degree in Petroleum Geosciences in the United Kingdom, with [UNIVERSITY_1] as my preferred institution for the September 2022 intake. My sub-areas of interest encompass all aspects of Petroleum Geosciences outlined in the course curriculum, including fieldwork components.

Motivation for Pursuing the Master's Program

Having worked in the upstream Oil and Gas industry for more than 12 years as a petroleum geologist, I am now looking to gradually transition towards more sustainable sources of energy, including crude oil exploration conducted in more environmentally responsible ways.

Geosciences are critical for ensuring a reliable and affordable supply of energy while minimizing environmental impacts. This holds true regardless of energy source, whether energy is stored in liquid fuels or batteries, or whether power generation is concentrated or distributed. At the most fundamental level, all forms of energy require Earth materials and resources. Each source of energy requires different materials, thus requiring different inputs from the geosciences for the discovery and production of those materials.

As is well known, crude oil production and consumption has brought out both the best and worst of modern civilization. The industry has contributed enormously to world economic growth and a higher standard of living in our time. On the other hand, the downside of petroleum development has left profound adverse impacts on the global environment. Hydrocarbons are now viewed with increasing skepticism for their environmental consequences. Thus, we can say energy is an irreplaceable part of our life and is highly correlated with the environment.

In conclusion, since the hydrocarbon industry contributes greatly to the environmental problems we are faced with, the need to understand the operations of the petroleum industry becomes mandatory.

Career Objectives and the Imperative for an MS Degree

Pursuing this Master's course will boost my career in Energy Geosciences as I have more than 12 years of work experience in Petroleum Geoscience. I am looking for a gradual career shift from conventional, non-renewable sources of energy to unconventional, renewable resources of energy. This course will help me build a solid foundation in the clean energy sector along with excellent international exposure. The first step from now onwards would be to acquire all the skills and knowledge [UNIVERSITY_1] has to offer.

In the long run, I see myself in a senior-most position handling multiple departments in the industry in a developed country, as my country, India, is still in the developing stage of becoming a total renewable energy nation.

My goals for the near future are to acquire the much-required technical expertise, confidence, and competence to pursue a career in the petroleum industry where there is a dearth of skilled human capital, an abundance of natural resources, and dire need of personnel who possess the passion and dedication needed to effect change in the industry worldwide. It is for this reason I have chosen to apply to your school based on the pool of well-known, industry-recognized lecturers, well-equipped laboratories, and relevant research interests based on industry collaboration. I am also aware of the size and diversity of the students in your graduate school, which combined, provides the right atmosphere to enable proper learning for all involved. Education is the manifestation of perfection already in man. Therefore, I decided to pursue a Master's degree in petroleum geosciences, and after completing my Master's degree, I would like to go into the field of extensive research to find ways to minimize environmental pollution. In the long term, I am interested in the possibilities of using my understanding of petroleum geosciences to positively impact the environment. I envision a career in this field as a culmination of my varied interests, and I would appreciate the opportunity to pursue this at [UNIVERSITY_1]. Personality and Leadership Skills

The time I spent studying at the [INSTITUTE_1] at [UNIVERSITY_2] gave me confidence in working in groups of students for fieldwork and also during classroom presentations and other laboratory tasks. Apart from academics, I have been a part of various co-curricular activities including sports and debate contests. Family Background

I belong to a defense background spanning the last three generations. I have been very much fascinated with traveling to different and less-explored places. This inspired me to take up Geology as a subject for my graduation. As I delved deep into this subject, I became captivated by the unknown, different, and very beautiful secrets of Mother Earth.

Coming from a defense background spanning three generations, I have always been fascinated with traveling to different and less-explored places. While studying, I read many books on oil wars and international relations. I was amazed to realize that one liquid—"Black Gold"—could be so important. I was fortunate to understand the mechanisms and processes involved in petroleum geoscience as a petroleum geologist while working in the biggest nationalized oil company in India. Over the course of time, I developed a deep interest to explore this field further at a global level. With my experience in this industry, I am totally convinced that my profile is suitable for pursuing a Master's in Petroleum Geosciences and strengthening my technical skills in this vast field. The growing scope in petroleum geoscience gives me confidence about building a successful career in the next few years.

Undergraduate Studies

As an undergraduate, I completed my Bachelor of Science in Geology from [UNIVERSITY_2] in Pakistan. It was a four-year honors program in which I was able to explore different fields in geology. Undergraduate study in geology gave me exposure to entire petroleum geology processes. I became mainly interested in tectonic systems, oil and gas exploration, and geophysical methods to explore hydrocarbons.

The last year of undergraduate studies required the completion of thesis work. I was chosen to conduct research work on the lithostructural mapping of the [LOCATION_1] area, with special emphasis on the industrial evaluation of [GEOLOGICAL_FORMATION_1].

Gap Year Justification

My parents wanted me to be a doctor, so I took one year for preparation and secured a seat in a medical college. However, having a strong interest in Earth science, I finally convinced them to allow me to pursue this dream.

Co-curricular Activities and Personal Interests

Along with focusing on my career, I try to maintain balance between work and leisure. As a pastime, I enjoy playing with my toddler, traveling, hiking/trekking, listening to music, and surfing the internet. I was the captain of our school house team, which involved various co-curricular activities. Due to my social and flexible nature, I enjoy a very diverse circle of friends. With an approachable personality, I am able to put at ease everyone I work with.

Finally, I believe that life is a constant learning process, and I am confident that I have the technical skills and qualifications that meet the requirements for the master's in Petroleum Geosciences. I am certain that my passion, ambition, and willingness to work hard will help me become a successful geologist.
