STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Master's in Landscape Architecture [APPLICANT_NAME]
Architecture not only stands for Art and Technology, but it also includes the mighty Nature. Nature means the process that never ends. It may change with the action we do, that could be positive or may be negative as a result. Now the time has changed so much in past few decades, that we cannot think of less or may be zero carbon footprint a site or environment. It should now contribute to the environment throughout the life span. Elements of earth are getting diminished day by day and there is no planet B. Maybe the fossil fuel might get replaced by electricity but there is no replacement of flora and fauna, the soul of the planet. Landscape and sustainability always stand side by side in architecture. Just like sustainability is not only about material, so as the landscaping is also not only about planting.
In bachelor's course, landscape was introduced in 3rd year as a subject and from there it aspired me to research more about architects working in the field of landscape architecture. Workshops and lectures related to the field of landscape and ecology caught my attention and I started looking at architecture with an added layer of landscape perspective. I attended a lecture series, where [PROFESSOR_NAME] presented his works and got an opportunity to start my practical training under his guidance. As he had worked with landscape architect [ARCHITECT_NAME], he had a deep understanding of ecology and landscape architecture. During my internship, he told me to read 'Design with Nature' book written by [ARCHITECT_NAME]. It is a beautifully described book on the relationship between man and nature and how the relationship should be treated. How delicate and destructive or how beautiful and furious the nature could be at the same time. Same as the life around the surface of earth, there is life beneath and above us but unfortunately, we don't admire those lives and overlook them. Earth is a living object, and that ecosystem is also the most vital part of the earth's system. During the internship, I participated in a design competition which was organized by [ORGANIZATION_NAME], which required me to design ecological solutions and understand the sociological and ecological grid of the city of [CITY] under the guidance of [PROFESSOR_NAME].
My Bachelor's thesis resulted as an opportunity and challenge for me to relate landscape and architecture at a very different level, that helped me understand the relationship between man and nature as told by [PROFESSOR_NAME]. [PROJECT_NAME], a school for [DISCIPLINE] located in [CITY] on the bank of [RIVER_NAME], resulted as a great learning and understanding of site planning and landscape with ecological concern. That not only helped me understand the natural landscape but also how it connects with the social one. How day to day life should be connected to the landscape of the site with the occupants and the transition of activities throughout the day. This resulted in the understanding of multi-layered design solutions not only as an architect but as an urban designer with landscape perspective.
The circle of nature is very simple and defined to interpret in talks but very hard to implement and execute in professional practice to understand and analyze the process of ecology and landscape. To understand the implementation of landscaping and ecology in projects, I worked with landscape architect [ARCHITECT_NAME] at [COMPANY_NAME] in [CITY] and explored the details and on-site experience of landscape design. During that period, I also attended lectures and workshops on ecology to understand its implementation using advanced analysis software.
After some time, I started my own practice as an architect and designed two sites which are currently in execution phase. A residential project in [CITY], [CITY] and fish feed industries in [CITY], [STATE]. Two different types of sites located in different regions of India. This taught me about the implementation of landscape in small scale projects and how a site could contribute keeping in mind the cost constraints.
Working under the landscape architects encouraged me to understand the course more diligently and aspired me to do master's in landscape architecture. As an architect we don't get to learn much about ecology, pedology, geography, potamology and other environmental studies in our Bachelor of Architecture. At the [UNIVERSITY_NAME], the course is structured and designed which focuses on both landscape architecture and ecological concern. The depth of landscape and ecology as the course has been designed by landscape architect [ARCHITECT_NAME] and now further guided by landscape architect [ARCHITECT_NAME] will surely benefit and help me to direct towards the greater goal for the future. Being involved for 2 years with great professors will definitely result as a foundation and encourage my aspirations in the field of landscape architecture.
After the master's, I will be able to bridge the gap between the architects and the environmental related fields, and this will also help me to setup my career in the field of landscape architecture. As a landscape architect, I will get to work with every design aspect and provide ecological solutions for my future projects.
