SOP Sample for MS Interior Design in the UK
Sample SOP for Master's in Interior Design focusing on sustainability, tailored for early-career architecture graduates applying in the UK.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The 5 years of my undergraduate program have given me ample opportunities to design large-scale projects while working with production designers gave me the opportunity to design interiors. Working on interior design projects piqued my curiosity in interior designing and I had the desire to learn more about this field. Therefore, my application to the MA interior architecture and design at [UNIVERSITY]. I now want to study more about interior designing, to develop my skills, to learn and grow. I want to be able to understand better aesthetics and sustainability and develop the skills needed to be able to bring life into a space rather than just build four walls. There's so much that can be explored by combining my undergraduate degree in architecture and a Master's degree in Interior Designing and I look forward to your university helping me reach this goal.
Growing up, I often watched a TV show called "Art Attack" and absolutely adored the host's ability to take pieces of paper and transform them into beautiful art pieces. But amongst all the projects he hosted, one that I took upon myself was to build a tent. I come from a humble home and we didn't have a lot but just enough, so I would use my imagination as means to fill in the gaps and I'd say I'm very good at that. So while the host used bundles of paper, I didn't have that so I figured that I would use sticks instead and tried to build a tent on my bed. However, as you could have imagined, it did not work out very well. Little did I know that while I was struggling to hold the sticks in place, I had already decided what vocation I wanted to pursue. When I failed in holding up the tent, I had an epiphany that I wanted to be able to construct and design spaces that would shelter people and that was the beginning of my dream of having a career in architecture and interior design.
I completed my undergraduate degree in architecture from [UNIVERSITY] and was thrilled at pursuing a program that allowed me to learn subjects such as Theory & Design of Structures, Architectural Building Construction & Materials, Environmental Studies, Architectural Representation & Detailing, etc. It was also during this program that I was given the opportunity to work on an interior design project and though the outcome might not have been excellent, it was much appreciated, and I thoroughly enjoyed the process of learning and research and became more inclined towards interior design. During my final year thesis, I had taken up "vertical farming". One of the main criteria for this thesis was to maintain sustainability. After conducting thorough research, I was able to produce a design that was not related to primary architecture but yet was highly appreciated by the faculty. I have also learned software, such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Photoshop.
By the time I was in the final year of the undergraduate program, I had become convinced that I would complement my architectural degree with an interior design degree from an international university. My decision to pursue a Master's in Interior Design from an international university was backed by my desire to gain international exposure and learn about interior design in an international context.
However, after I graduated, the world was gripped by the Covid pandemic and my dream of pursuing a Master's from an international university looked bleak at that point in time. Therefore, I decided to hold my plan for a few months and went on to do an 8-month internship and worked as a trainee to a Production designer. I had to design sets that were from the 1940s era and being fresh out of college, it was a challenging role. Heading an entire department of construction prop, I had to deal with contractors, artists, shop owners, innovate to match the Indian standards, and get my ideas approved by the assistant director. However, not only did I manage to perform my role to perfection but was able to get a promotion in a short period of time and was given the option to continue working with my boss on various other projects. Since then, I have worked on the Production design of an [COMPANY] web series and a few ad films.
After working for almost a year in this role, as much as I love set design, I feel that there is a lot more to learn in interior design and perform my work even better. Therefore, I wish to understand more about the intricacies of interior design and therefore apply to [UNIVERSITY]. I wish to start my own interior design firm and see this program as an essential bridge between my goals and current skill sets.
I am enamoured by [UNIVERSITY]'s master's program in interior design. The program—with its focus on integrating theoretical and practical learning—will help me gain fundamental knowledge on interior design. Since I wish to incorporate sustainable design in all my designs, I would like to specialize in sustainable designing and this program offers me that opportunity. The focused learning in small classes will help me get the faculties' personalized attention and better understand the course modules. I also wish to network with my global peers and seniors and learn from their diverse backgrounds and experiences. I take pride in being an independent thinker and would like to bring my thoughts, values, and ideas to your program and make it a fruitful association.
