Statement of Purpose

"When you work in the pharmaceutical industry you realize that there's a lot out of people's control, and there's ways that people can be helped." - Paul Stamets. With the discovery of new diseases or variants of existing ones on a regular basis, the role of medical science and pharmaceuticals have expanded exponentially. Researches have now diversified and multiplied to counter the increasing numbers of threats to human lives. Considering my proclivity towards tasks and subjects that entail research and my knowledge in pharmaceuticals, a Master of Science degree programme in Pharmacology and Toxicology from a reputable university would be befitting for my future endeavours.

My family consists of my businessman father, my homemaker mother and my sister who is employed abroad as a nurse and is married to someone from the same profession. Having no one from the field of pharmaceuticals in my family further encouraged me to continue with this profession because it aligned with my persistent efforts to be unique.

I was always a sincere student. My results were never exceptional but my parents were quite satisfied with the fact that I acquired the knowledge that was meant to be imbibed, and the insufficiency of marks was a consequence of me not being good at rote learning. I completed my tenth grade examinations from [SCHOOL_NAME], [CITY], Kerala in 2013 with a score of 86%. Moving on, I completed my intermediate level examinations from [SCHOOL_NAME], [CITY], Kerala in 2015 with a score of 70%. Completing my intermediates, I decided to further my studies in the discipline of pharmaceuticals. I pursued a programme, Doctor of Pharmacy in [COLLEGE_NAME], [CITY], Karnataka, under [UNIVERSITY_NAME], [CITY] during 2015-21 and completed the course with a score of 77.1%. Meantime, I completed an Advanced Post Graduate Diploma course in Pharmacovigilance from [INSTITUTION_NAME], [CITY] in 2021.

The undergraduate programme was my initiation into this field and provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the various aspects of pharmaceuticals. I gained a more profound understanding of the concepts in the course of the project, titled "Study on Burden of Preterm Birth in Selected Hospitals in [CITY]" during my fifth year of the undergraduate programme. This project provided me with the opportunity to interact with professionals from diverse fields and the locals to collect necessary data. This was a new experience and I had to overcome the language barrier by learning some Kannada words to make communication with the locals possible. This was published in [JOURNAL_NAME]. The hands-on experience this project provided gave me a fair idea of what could be expected in the professional sector in the future.

I furthered my comprehension about the field by attending multiple conferences, seminars and workshops. I attended the 69th Indian Pharmaceutical Conference held at [UNIVERSITY_NAME] [CITY], Punjab in 2017. Following this, I attended Seminar on Disproportionality analysis in Spontaneous reporting database held at [COLLEGE_NAME] by [PROFESSOR_NAME], Assistant Professor, [UNIVERSITY_NAME], in December, 2019. I also attended a workshop on Industrial aspects of Pharmacovigilance organized at [COLLEGE_NAME] in collaboration with [ORGANIZATION_NAME] and [INSTITUTION_NAME] on 29th and 30th March, 2019.

My initiation into the professional sector was when I interned at [HOSPITAL_NAME] – [CITY], Karnataka from July, 2020 to July, 2021. This stint enhanced my technical skills. I can monitor the Drug Interaction, ADR if any and do the root cause analysis. In addition, I learnt to coordinate with doctors and nurses and answer their queries related to proper use, storage, stability and overdose of drugs, monitoring the prescription through analysing, evaluating and detecting of drug related problems, Ability to gather, and analyse and understand complex medical data with excellent communication skills and accuracy. Eventually, I developed the ability to handle and treat patients with Confidence, Care and Support. I was able to hone my communication skills and also acquired a better understanding of everything I had been taught in class about the subject.

Besides my academics and endeavours to improve skills which would be of the essence in the professional sector, I was an active participant in the extracurricular activities which were organized by my institutions. Dance is one of those activities I am passionate about and I try to self-tutor myself by watching videos. I had attended a few dance classes when I was nine but it was not continued. I tried my hand at various dance programmes at both school and college levels. In addition, I consider myself an aesthete because of my fondness for art and its ability to improve the quality of life. My organizing skills were also tested and passed with flying colours when in my third year, I planned and arranged a trip for twelve students to [UNIVERSITY_NAME], Punjab for the Indian Pharmaceutical Congress with just a month of preparation. I have a fondness for cars and desired to get a driving license at eighteen, which was an endeavour I was successful in.

Considering that I aspire to be a researcher and scientist in the future, it is imperative that I further my knowledge in academics to reach my destination. This course would give me enough opportunity to explore various aspects of pharmaceuticals and bolster my knowledge on Clinical Research. It also aligns with my affinity towards research and experiment-based subjects over theories and rote learning. Taking into account that this course has been introduced in India fairly recently, getting this degree from an international university would give me a greater opportunity to excel and reach greater heights. This university would give me the golden opportunity to interact with some of the best students from round the globe which it welcomes annually to obtain education of the finest quality. At the same time, being guided by some of the most effective and experienced faculty members of this university would make acquiring new skills and knowledge an easier task.
