Master of Science Mechanical Engineering
# Statement of Purpose
I grew up in a mining area, regularly seeing huge mining trucks run around my house and was fascinated by their size and complexity! Thus, the role of machines has been etched in my consciousness since time immemorial, causing an immediate affinity whenever I seek to learn more about them. Secondly, being associated with such a place, I have also come to realize that machines form an integral part of our existence and are very crucial to the development of a civilization. As a result, I was always wanting to contribute to the building of this instrument of change, adding new features, learning its functioning, and increasing sustainability as I go on innovating the world of mechanics. I not just groomed my early interests in huge mining machines especially dump trucks, but also became interested in automobiles. I started with studying physics during school, and grew with a Bachelors in Technology degree in Automobile Engineering from [UNIVERSITY].
In early years I realized my natural talent of 3D visualization and spatial arrangements, solving many of the problems by re-imagining into 3D. So it was clear from the beginning that I am built for mechanics. Additionally, I covered a range of subjects such as Automotive Structures and Design, Fluid Mechanics, Vehicle Aerodynamics, Computer Aided Engineering Lab, Computer Aided Part Modelling, Engineering Graphics, and Theory of Machines. This gave me an in depth understanding of not just the concepts applicable in engineering, but also their functional aspects in the real world.
I was chosen as a powertrain engineer at [UNIVERSITY RACING TEAM] after going through recruitment in college, which designs, manufactures and competes in national and international SAE Baja off-road racing events every year. I was the major contributor to the design of the reduction gearbox with help from junior subordinates. This gearbox weighed almost half of that of previous cars which was very helpful to reduce weight of car in order to maximize car performance. The practical design of machine elements, manufacturing them, testing, seeing them fail, redesigning and making improvements was a broad exposure and practice of applying theories and ideas. I had the opportunity to conduct thermal analysis around CVT transmission, developing a cooling solution and getting involved with thermal sensors to measure transmission temperatures to take inputs for thermal analysis and calculation. I found it very interesting to learn something on electronics something new outside my domain.
Moreover, I also took up internships with organizations such as [COMPANY_1] and [COMPANY_2], which helped me to explore more in my area of interest – mining equipment. At [COMPANY_1] (a [COMPANY_2] dealer in India), learning was mostly centered around learning hydraulic systems and maintenance of mining trucks. I had opportunity to learn and manage maintenance schedules, identify failures at early stages and take corrective measures to have least possible maintenance downtime. However, I was curious about thought process behind design of these machines, thus I requested for an Internship with design team at [COMPANY_2], which I got through recommendation. At [COMPANY_2] I had opportunity to have hands on experience on new design software Pro E. I got involved with design of hydraulic hoses, clamps and routing hoses in Cat 777E dump truck's central lubrication attachment project. Learnings on product lifecycle management was something new and challenging as this was out of scope of my academics.
After having a solid run with my internships, I had the privilege to be recruited by [COMPANY_3], a global fortune company and largest Indian engineering conglomerate in the country. I have been serving here for 3 years. My job as an application engineer is to analyze performance of [COMPANY_4] excavators and test upcoming products in various applications. Performance was measured with respect to site conditions, machine modes and hydraulic settings, operator performance, machine utilization in various jobs, material arrangement, material conditions. In process I learned tools - real disp & Power BI to collect data from the machine using computer and analyze the data. Having gained expertise in the field, I was also responsible for training the field team in application studies. During testing new products, I am responsible to understand machine, access areas of improvements in design and hydraulic settings (modes, rpms, pump absorption torques) required and communicate these to OEM, and test final product – thereby bridging the gap between customer expectations and actual product delivery.
One of such product was the [PRODUCT_MODEL], which went on to became highly successful. I was widely appreciated across team for my long, consistent efforts in understanding the model's performance before launch. Parallelly being involved with the department of sales and marketing, I have also seen good development in the transactional world and have developed my communication and social skills from average to an excellent level. I have developed good understanding of how to approach explaining my point to others – verbally or written. I played a pivotal role in mostly developmental / creative projects like CRM application for the sales team, business process improvements, and preparing sales documents like technical comparisons and product presentations. I also got opportunity to learn basic data analysis by analyzing market & sales data, lifecycle cost data, machine failures etc.
I have always wanted to strengthen my core knowledge and gain the required skills to contribute to society for a better tomorrow. Working in the current role where I study and test machines, I realize my real satisfaction is to be the one designing those machines. My aspiration is to design machine elements, develop new technologies and apply in product development. I picture myself as a lead machine designer in product development department of an innovative global company, making significant contribution to progress of humanity in technology by my role.
After going through this multipotential journey, applying for a master's program in Mechanical Engineering at [UNIVERSITY] allows me to learn from the best faculties in the field of Mechanics and graduate to advanced dimensions of this field.
