Statement of Purpose

I am hereby applying for a Master's in International Business at [UNIVERSITY]. I am an economics graduate student from [COLLEGE], Mumbai, which is one of the oldest and best colleges in India. I take this opportunity to introduce myself to support my application for the Master's in International Business offered by your esteemed institution. By taking part in your Master's Program, I aim to make the best use of your facilities to broaden my horizon and deepen my knowledge with the ideology of "putting in more than what we take out" and prove myself as an actively contributing asset of your dignified institution. I chose the International Business course because it offers solutions to some of mankind's biggest challenges like poverty, unemployment, unsustainable development and the resulting socio-economic disparities, while the study, research and work in this field helps to build a strong, healthy, educated and economically developed society.

Growing up in one of the most backward states of India, the problem of unemployment and poverty happens to be a common issue in our society. Then I began to realize the need for proper economic development and policy. Business and Management courses can be used as a weapon to solve our nation's social and economic problems. I believe industrialists and businessmen use new models and skills to understand the world, which was fascinating to me. Hence I learned that to get something big, getting through competitions is an unavoidable phase. As I further travelled down the road to my destiny, I first exposed myself to the world of competitions. It was when I was 11 years old that I gave my first state level entrance examination. It was rather a highly competitive exam where approximately 5,000 students were competing for only 80 seats. I was honoured to get myself enrolled into one of the most reputable government schools wherein students are fully funded with scholarships. I was lucky to have studied my whole high school years on scholarships. During my stay in [SCHOOL], [CITY], [STATE], India, which is one of the largest government school cum boarding school, I was introduced to varieties of curricular and co-curricular activities. As captain of our school Kho-Kho team, I represented our school in the National level tournament at the 58th National School Games 2012-13 organised by [ORGANIZATION]. This experience taught me a valuable lesson and the importance of the responsibility of managing a team under my command.

Studying Management and Business as a discipline is just like riding a bicycle, as to how we need to keep balance of every aspect in life to deal with the management of scarce resources in order to get maximum satisfaction. It was during my 10th standard that I read "Understanding Economic Development," a social science textbook which I found extremely interesting. The book taught me that everyone's development can be different pertaining to their needs, which in turn helped me see the dire need of our society to have sound economic development. And for me to actively participate in ameliorating the current economic status of our society, I need to become an independent person and strike a position as a capable and devoted citizen in the society. Since then I began to develop a keen interest in International Business and trade. The fact I like about the International Business course is how economic units interact to form larger units like markets and industries at the international level, which is exemplary to my goal to set my foot in the world of entrepreneurship and help provide jobs to the unemployed masses and ultimately put an end to the problem of unemployment.

I realized that I have made the right decision in studying Economics in my undergraduate program as I started to enjoy my study in this field and eventually my grades improved. During my second year in college, I was amongst the 10 best students in my class where I got the highest marks in two subjects, namely Micro-Economics and Elementary Quantitative Techniques. In my third year undergraduate program, I have opted for Economics along with other subjects like Econometrics, Statistics, History of Economic Thought, International Economics, and Financial Economics. With this subject combination I was able to improve on my quantitative skills. Further, my grades improved which helped me receive a prestigious Shield of Honour, namely [AWARD_NAME], which is given on the ground of overall achievements of the student in our college hostel, i.e. [HOSTEL_NAME] for the year 2019-2020 as Best Student of the Year.

Leadership is one of the most important traits to transform our potential into reality. During my stay in [COLLEGE], I was President of [ORGANIZATION] which aims to help the students who came from the backward states of Northeast India to understand and adapt to the new surroundings. I have experienced and learned many good qualities by working in this organisation. We had organised numbers of activities like career counselling, trekking, dinner night, freshers meet, cultural programs, etc. I have learned the value of teamwork, the importance of time management, financial management and problem solving. As a student, managing a group of more than 100 people was always a challenging task, but with the help of the Committee Members and Coordinating Teachers, we made every activity a grand success. I learned that others' opinions are one of the most important aspects to run a business. Because of this, I was able to conduct a field trip to a tribal area as a group leader in [LOCATION], Maharashtra, India. In this field trip, I found firsthand the problems faced by them happened to be health and nutrition, poverty, indebtedness, lack of hygiene, lack of education, etc. In this field trip, I was able to apply the questionnaire method of Research Analysis which I studied in Economics.

I believe if we want to bring changes we need to understand the whole of the economy. Development can be made in many ways, but economic development is the most important of all because it improves the well-being of people and economic growth creates higher tax revenues which helps reduce government debt. With proper understanding of the international market as a whole, I want to build up my own economic policy so that I can start my business or firm to create more job opportunities as I believe that giving employment will reduce poverty. I got the privilege to personally meet renowned personalities of Indian origin who bagged the Nobel Prize in Economics 2019, namely [NAME] and [NAME], in their book launch event at [VENUE], Mumbai, India, where I had the opportunity to interact and discuss recent issues related to global poverty and clear my doubts from these well-experienced persons. With this I became inspired to know more about multinational companies and how they function in different countries.
