Statement of Purpose

Sometimes the most insignificant of things or experiences become the guiding light of our lives and keep us on our path to success. For me, it was that dull day in my second year of engineering when one of my professors mentioned the 'Dunning-Kruger Effect' in one of his lectures. He intended to tell us that learning should never really stop and to never be convinced that we know enough. This simple thought process has stayed with me ever since and even though many professors have delivered many lectures after that, this one, in particular, has stayed with me.

A few months after this lecture, I took up an internship during my gap year. I was looking forward to a frontend development internship but they offered me a UX intern position instead. I wasn't so sure what UX was at that time, but I took that offer in the hope that I would learn more on the job. The next few years played a decisive role in my career and I learned the tools for wireframing, observed my seniors conduct user research, and strategize their products. It was as if I had found my calling and I thought this was the most interesting job ever.

When I resumed college to complete my degree, I wanted to stay connected to the field of design and hence started learning about visual design and user experience design from the internet during the next two years. Needless to say, the internet is a wonderful place and I found an amazing and supportive community of designers and fellow learners online. I attended seminars and workshops for everything design and realized that I belong here. At this point, I felt confident about myself and believed that I had a good understanding of the field.

However, there was more to come. In the final year of my undergraduate degree, I found out that [PROFESSOR_NAME] was going to deliver the keynote speech at the [CONFERENCE_NAME] conference at [INSTITUTION_NAME]. It was tough for me to get there since it was very last minute, but I was determined to go. I traveled for around 26 hours by road, but when I got there, it was worth it. In his speech, [PROFESSOR_NAME] spoke about sustainability in tech, how Human-Centered Design is perhaps the most influential driving force in tech, and it was at this point I realized how much more there is to UX design than just designing digital products. After his speech, we got a chance to speak, and [PROFESSOR_NAME] recommended studying interaction design since I am an engineer interested in design.

I have been a self-starter and a highly motivated individual since my formative years, which enabled me to excel in various directions throughout my schooling years. I accumulated a variety of skills as the years passed by, which made it possible for me to do well academically and in my extracurricular endeavors and continued this in the undergraduate program too. Besides academics, the undergraduate years saw me participating in the cultural fest [EVENT_NAME], where I was part of the winning team in the Fashion Show. I have participated in [EVENT_NAME] - a tech-fest, [EVENT_NAME] and in [EVENT_NAME]. Moved by the plight of orphans of farmers, I have raised INR 1,11,111 by being part of a street play.

Soon after this, I graduated and decided to work in UX and joined a young and exciting IT company based out of [CITY]. When I started working here, I was given the responsibility to work on various projects across different domains like edutech, finance, e-commerce among others. These projects used technologies like Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, and data science and my team was creating magic! I couldn't be more excited about the work I was doing but at the same time, I realized I didn't know as much as I thought I did. This took me back to that lecture from my 2nd year, the Dunning-Kruger effect. I realized I had a long way to go. "Never be convinced you know enough".

With this realization came my decision to pursue a Master's in Human-Computer Interaction from {UNIVERSITY NAME} and augment my knowledge in the field. I am applying to your program with the hope to climb the proverbial 'slope of enlightenment' with you. I wish to learn the art of crafting unforgettable experiences, making products more accessible, feasible, and usable. The world of tech is evolving faster than ever, and I believe it is important to learn the fundamentals while being flexible with the applications. The interfaces of today might be obsolete in the next decade, as XR and VUI are becoming more integrated into our lives, with devices getting smarter by the day. I am thrilled to imagine myself working on these technologies, making them more intuitive, and designing interactions that spark a connection with people.

The universities in the USA promise a holistic approach making the programs more attractive to me. I will not just gain bookish knowledge, but also practical experience, which will be invaluable in my skill development. The universities of the USA are symbolic of quality and they imbibe a rich cultural heritage which when combined with modern-day teaching techniques, is the perfect education setting for me.

{UNIVERSITY NAME} with its comprehensive course, core modules such as ……. and ……. and electives such as ……. and ……. would help me to understand the subjects and concepts in depth. The best part is the small class size where a student can get one-to-one interaction in every course. In order to expand and boost my knowledge, I want to get mentored by professors namely …………………, and ……………., who would help me to understand the application of the knowledge. The diverse student bodies and student groups at the universities will also make my graduate experience more versatile. It will be the perfect window to perceive and interact with the world.
