Statement of Purpose

The word "health" is typically associated with medical matters, so the definition of public health could be confusing. Those who are in the profession do not practice medicine unlike those who are in clinical settings—such as in a doctor's office or hospital. Yet, studies show that Public Health plays a major role in the prevention of health issues, and under the guidance of professionals in this field, individuals could spend more of their years in good health. The goal of Public Health is to assure the quality and accessibility of health services. It reduces human suffering in cases such as the prevention of epidemics and the spread of disease, injuries, helps children thrive, saves money, helps in disaster relief, provides clean water and improves the quality of life. Those that are working in the area of Public Health focus on improving and protecting community health and the well-being of large groups of people and preventing disease.

I have direct access to this information because one of my cousins, whom I am close to, is a Public Health Officer. He is my role model, not only because he is good at his job but he also tackles every situation with kindness and sensitivity taking the circumstances of the patient into consideration, which makes him a rare person. I have learnt a lot from him and hope to follow in his footsteps. To do this, and eventually be in a field where I could serve people with dedication, love, and respect, I took the next step. After I completed school, I took a year's break to prepare for the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET), which is an all India Pre-Medical Test. My hard work paid rich dividends and I became eligible to enrol for Bachelors of Physiotherapy.

Throughout my course, I absorbed all that I was taught knowing that every day I was getting closer to my goal. To utilize my knowledge and skills, I did a rotatory internship program for 6 months. In this stint, I mainly observed how doctors in different areas or wings of the hospital work and I sometimes helped them. I learnt to listen to the problems of psychiatric patients and understanding their mental state. But more importantly, I realized what they were going through. I also attended camps where I used to treat people for free.

I then went on to do Masters in Hospital and Healthcare Management. Perturbed about patients who leave the hospital against medical advice, I did a project on this topic and arrived at a logical conclusion. I also did a 2-month internship as a Hospital and Healthcare trainee.

For the past 10 months, I have been working as a Quality and Operations Executive in a multi-specialty hospital, dealing with patients that are not satisfied with the hospital services. I am part of the core team that helps the management make decisions. I was also a part of the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare (NABH) Audit for my hospital accreditation program. To glean as much information and learning that I possibly can, I have attended training, online classes, certification courses. Throughout, I have realized the need to possess international skills and techniques to contribute to the public health domain.

When Covid struck and the world realized that we had a pandemic on our hands, I helped the poor and needy, as they needed it the most. We made food packages, water bottles and also arranged tents for migrants who were moving from cities to their native places. That is when I realized that I should carry forward my passion and decided to learn more about the Public Health domain. As I already have a 2-year Management degree for my Master's in Hospital and Healthcare, I want to learn more about the Public Health domain with a special focus on interaction.

Having already done 2 years of Management for my Master's degree in Hospital and Healthcare, I want to study further in this domain. I want to learn more about how to analyze statistics and design research studies to figure out how to make people healthier. I want to study in the USA because it is now acknowledged as the world's knowledge capital. My ultimate goal is to advance my career to a higher number in 10 years. I hope to advance in this vertical and make a positive impact as a public health officer.
