SOP Sample for MS in Embedded Systems - India Diploma to Masters
Sample SOP for MS in Embedded Systems focusing on diploma to masters transition for Indian students with no experience.
Statement of Purpose
Diploma in Instrumentation was a new terminology which became synonymous with my name, for the subject I took up was a fresh choice for an Indian engineering student. People have often inquired of me regarding my degree, career choices, and courses with reference to BTech in core streams of engineering. I could only derive an incomplete ideology to explain the magical dimensions of learning to which this diploma exposed me, how it helped me renew my perspective on the world of technology, and compelled me to think about the abstract and exponential paradigms of software and technology development that are coming at us at a fast rate. I am glad that I have gotten this opportunity to share my purpose and aspirations with you, as I would be honored to be associated with you in this journey.
It began with my fascination with sensors and their ability to quantize physical quantities, which led me to pursue a career in Instrumentation engineering. I started with my diploma in Instrumentation and during this period I learned about sensors. After learning about sensors and their working, I started using different sensors and peripherals with microcontrollers and development boards. I worked with a lot of development boards like [PRODUCT_NAME] and [PRODUCT_NAME] and interfaced with various sensors to create a few hobby projects. This piqued my interest in the field of embedded systems. This led me to working on a variety of microcontrollers and microprocessors like ARM, AVR and 8051. This is the major reason why I am inspired to work in embedded systems software and learn about real-time systems and operating systems.
During my 6th semester, I studied a subject called digital signal processing in which I explored how signals generated from various sources can be used in applications such as speech recognition, image processing, etc. During COVID-19, I worked on various projects regarding this with [SOFTWARE_NAME] and [SOFTWARE_NAME], and started practical learning using datasets and models from sources like [PLATFORM_NAME] and [PLATFORM_NAME]. This led me to choose another elective called image processing.
I wish to learn about embedded systems software. I have worked on real-time operating systems like [RTOS_NAME] and various projects which included sensor integrations and communication. To gain an insight into these fields, a master's degree from highly prolific universities with such high research output in the field will provide me with the expertise I need to excel.
In the long term, I would like to use this experience for applications such as consumer electronics, especially consumer biomedical devices where my experience will benefit the community. I would like to work with companies like [COMPANY_NAME], [COMPANY_NAME], and [COMPANY_NAME] as an embedded software developer in the field of consumer electronics and create a long-lasting impact in the industry.
For this aim, throughout my time during Diploma in Instrumentation engineering, I have worked on various projects, taken up internships, and have tried to understand the professional world through direct application. In this regard, I have worked on a project called "GPS and GSM based school bus tracking system," which also had features such as geofence alert. I was the leader for the project by virtue of which I was working with AT commands to control modules (GPS and GSM) and designing the system. I also worked on my organizational skills and communication skills.
Moreover, another significant project which symbolized change and growth for me was the Multichannel Configurable PID Controller (final year project, under the guidance of [PROFESSOR_NAME]). This project was intended for industrial applications where systems like boilers require multiple controllers. As I successfully completed the project while managing the team, I also learned about research and literature survey, understanding how real-time operating systems (RTOS) work and how to integrate various peripherals.
Additionally, I did a third project known as Greenhouse Monitoring System (third-year project, under the guidance of [PROFESSOR_NAME]). This monitoring system can be used to measure various parameters needed for a better understanding of greenhouse systems like soil moisture. We sent that data over WiFi to a database from where users can view data in their mobile app that we created. Herein, I learned about [PLATFORM_NAME], which is a backend as a service, about working with WiFi and app development.
Now, it was time to test the waters and see my talent, hard work, and intelligence function in the professional world. Beginning with a summer internship by [ORGANIZATION_NAME] on the [APP_NAME] app for various activities in college, I took up another internship with [COMPANY_NAME] as IoT app developer and worked on the project "Smart Agriculture System based on IoT." After my undergrad, I started working with one of my professors, [PROFESSOR_NAME]. I am working on development boards created by [PROFESSOR_NAME], creating BSP for these boards to work with [COMPILER_NAME] compiler and a custom board for [PLATFORM_NAME] for these boards which students can use to work on these projects, making boards made by professors compatible with [PLATFORM_NAME] so students can easily work on these boards. I am currently working on developing a digital PID temperature controller with ramp and soak function for thermoluminescent dosimeter for [COMPANY_NAME], where temperature changes range from 1-40 degrees Celsius per second (mentored by [PROFESSOR_NAME]).
Apart from this, I completed several self-study projects during COVID-19. During that time I also attended a few courses on [PLATFORM_NAME] like Cybersecurity and IoT, Getting Started with Python, and also practiced various problem statements on [PLATFORM_NAME] in Python and C. I am sure your master's program will help in unfathomable ways, and I will be able to establish myself as an aware and dynamic professional.
