Statement of Purpose
Today, we are in a radically changing milieu where data has been playing a vital role for organisations to achieve a competitive edge over others. The improvement and innovations in new-age technologies have made businesses more effective and reliable. With the emergence of Data Science, there has been a significant shift that is taking place day by day from a world with the meagre presence of data to a world driven by an abundance of data. This change has been a motivation for me to develop into a data-oriented engineer, one that allows me to take advantage of my innate talent to succeed in such a role.
From my school days, I showed great enthusiasm in observing the practical application of electronic devices and I wanted to learn how they are implemented in real life. As I grew up, I gained deeper knowledge in the field of electronics and understood how advantageous the integration of computer science into the field of electronics will be. With that motivation, I decided to pursue my undergraduate in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering from [UNIVERSITY_NAME], [STATE], which is one of the top-tier colleges and a premier autonomous public technical university under the jurisdiction of MHRD, GOI in the country.
Mathematics has always been my favourite subject and I preferred understanding the logic behind solving problems rather than just the formulae-answer approach. The same is evident from being awarded as "The Master in Mathematics" while in my School at [SCHOOL_NAME]. There has been no look back ever since I accepted the fact that Mathematics has been a stronger innate quality I am proud to have in me. I have been consistently showing the same excellence in the further years not just in maths but also with my overall studies. The same has been showcased with the GPA of 8.54/10 in my bachelor's degree. I am sure that I would continue to achieve academic success as a graduate student at your institution.
I was introduced to the programming world during my freshman year through the basics of C programming for the first time. Involving more and more into programming during the lab sections, I found a very close relationship between mathematics and coding. Both involved logical brainstorming in solving problems while one deals with choosing appropriate formulae, the other requires choosing an appropriate algorithm to obtain the appropriate output. The eagerness in me in digging deeper into the world of coding made me choose the electives like the web of things and data structures from the field of computer science which gave me insights into data structure programming with various concepts of algorithm paradigms and to analyse the complexity of algorithms and eventually got introduced to many more computer languages, predominantly C++ and Python.
Studying a mix of electronics, computing and business fundamentals from one of India's leading educational Institutions, [UNIVERSITY_NAME], served as a fertile ground in acquiring such a multidimensional approach early by providing several opportunities to understand the real-world requirements. The first is participating in a practical problem-solving project-based competition called [COMPETITION_NAME] which is one of the most valued competitions conducted by the Government of India through [UNIVERSITY_NAME]. The task was to make a bipod patrol robot that moves through various terrains with a team of four members. I, being the team lead of a group of four, had completed the simulation part satisfactorily but due to the unfortunate pandemic and disrupted services to the remote place where we live, we couldn't get the hardware required to make the simulated model a reality.
Although the project wasn't completely successful, I got deeper insights on the real-time use of Python and its libraries which along with the prior hands-on experience with spreadsheets helped me attain an internship in a start-up company [COMPANY_NAME] which helped me sharpen my skills in spreadsheets, SQL and Python as part of a Data Visualisation Internship even more and became one of the major reasons to dream of pursuing a master's degree in Data Analytics/Data Science.
During my final year, [COMPANY_NAME] (my present employer) was the first company to approach the college campus placements drive and offered me a job in the area of Communication Media and Technology. It fills me with pride to say that I am the first and the only candidate from departments other than the Computer Science department to get selected in the very first company that came to campus seeking coding talents. My six months in [COMPANY_NAME] helped me understand the deeper challenges one can face while performing complex coding. With the immense training, the company pushed me a step closer in achieving my dream of pursuing a Masters degree in Data Analytics/Data Science.
I find the master's degree a bridge between my dreams and reality through leveraging the knowledge gained and helping me transfigure the same into developing real-world solutions. In the short term, I seek to work as a data-oriented engineer focusing on analytics in companies such as [COMPANY_NAME], [COMPANY_NAME], and [COMPANY_NAME] for which the university's modules will be key to success. Such experience will help me achieve my long-term goal of becoming an expert in technology consulting. I want to use the expertise to implement analytics in lesser touched fields like agriculture where I believe there is a higher demand for data analytics in managing the product research data for the plant, soil and animal health which enables precision agriculture performance by providing insights for livestock wellness monitoring and integrating transparency through the food supply chain. Furthermore, I want to take this mode of analytics which is majorly been used by MNCs to be operational at small and medium enterprises, help them access and use the technology in a cost-effective manner, which I believe would lead to immense potential in bringing out the fruitfulness of the world we are living in. This reminds me of the famous quote by William Gibson: "The future is already here – it's just not evenly distributed."
This master's program in Data Analytics/Data Science at your institution is an essential step to the success that I yearn for in my career ahead in the tech field as a data scientist, data analyst, data expert, etc. I am confident the programming skills I acquired already, especially in the areas such as MySQL, Python, R and my prior experiences in dealing with spreadsheets like Google Spreadsheets and Microsoft Excel will also come in handy for me to overcome problems that may stumble upon during my course learning at the university and with the university's guidance I strongly believe I will delve much deeper into research and analysis and create more meaningful and insightful data solutions and prepare the best arsenal that transforms the business process.
Furthermore, it excites me to hear that there are plenty of opportunities prevailing in and around the university in continuing the extra-curriculums that I love the most beyond college hours. From my early schooling, I have been a friendly student to my faculty, being which I understood the real fruitfulness in being educated and educating others which motivated me to tutor the poor in maths and physics during the weekends under [NGO_NAME]. As an Engineering Student, I got an opportunity to join the college's National Service Scheme and extended my service to my best during my college days. I had also been a very active participant in various clubs, committees and various college activities that happened in the college during my four year period. During the period, I served as head of the design team for [EVENT_NAME], the college tech fest, special co-ordinator in NSS and one of the five directors of [CLUB_NAME] and with your University, I am confident I could continue my service and extra-curriculums along with the studies in a balanced way.
