Statement of Purpose

The ability of computing technology to transform the world has always been a great inspiration for me to pursue a career in the world of computing. The goal is to build systems that capitalize on the synergy of users and data in everyday lives to usher us into the next age of computing. This is a mission I have always resonated with and I seek to carry this forward in my journey as an academician at your esteemed university and as a professional in the industry.

For the past one year, I have been working as a Software Engineer at [COMPANY_NAME], where I was exposed to the nitty gritties of new technologies in the field of computing and gained the invaluable experience of creating large-scale web applications. It has been nothing short of a stellar experience with my performances being recognized as a top performer recipient of the [AWARD_NAME]. But before I jump into the present, I will take a moment to chart my journey back from where it all started, the beginning.

My academic journey can be traced back to my yesteryears of joining as a freshman undergraduate student in [UNIVERSITY_NAME], one of the premier technology universities in India. The flexibility here was quite frankly a life-changing opportunity for me because it allowed me to explore varied interests and multiple dimensions of engineering and applied sciences at a very early stage in my career. While my first four semesters were spent in understanding and falling out of love with the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, it was a turbulent but necessary phase of my life in hindsight. I have no qualms in accepting that this period was perhaps the most eye-opening phase of my life in terms of aligning my career choices. It was undoubtedly a period of self-doubt, but my father had always taught me that where some men see self-doubt, others see an invitation to be greater. That message has always stuck with me throughout and it charted my journey for my very first industry exposure at [COMPANY_NAME] in 2018.

As a Machine Learning Intern, I was exposed quite intimately to different kinds of data models, processing, and analysis at the industrial level. The beautiful mixture of Mathematics, computing, and cutting-edge technology struck a chord with me unlike anything before in my life. This was a realization for me on multiple levels and helped me to discern what my professional liking was.

Just like every statistical test, I needed more evidence to ascertain my liking for the field of computing and that led me to take up a course called Foundations of Data Science and Neural Networks and Fuzzy Logic in my 5th semester of college. The alignment of skills and subject expertise that the course provided me was more than enough for me to ascertain that the litmus test of my passion was indeed successful. I eventually took a string of courses to further deepen my understanding of the field of computing including the likes of Data Structures and Algorithms, Operating Systems, and Data Mining to name a few.

My superlative performances and passion in the above courses didn't go unnoticed and it allowed me to land a research opportunity with [PROFESSOR_NAME], in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Signal Processing. I worked on a project under him to build a muscle computer interface to reduce driver distraction for which I built a 3D CNN model to classify the hold or grip of various parts of the driver's palm using EMG signals. I also had the opportunity to work on models which could potentially detect atrial fibrillation using ECG signals and myocardial infraction using vector cardiogram in order to enhance detection and diagnosis of such conditions at an early stage. [PROFESSOR_NAME] had mentored me closely when I was undertaking the Neural Networks course and my relationship with him has been critical in shaping my ambitions since Day 1. He played a vital role in my development as a professional seeking to align his career in a fast-moving world of technology. What I initially perceived as a handicap and lost time in terms of Electronics Engineering and then eventually pivoting towards Computer Science Engineering, turned out to be a blessing in disguise of the highest proportions.

In order to diversify my learning of different use cases of Computer Science, I landed a highly coveted internship at [COMPANY_NAME], in the capacity of a Software Engineering Intern. It was the next step of anchorage in my journey to become a professional Computer Engineer. It allowed me to strategically pave the next steps of my career in order to fulfill my mission statement of being a proponent and proud contributor of the next generation of computing technologies like AI and ML. Areas of interest like Deep Learning, Neural Networks where I have carried out research projects and courses, demand that I upskill myself to a higher pedigree in order to achieve the impact I have always sought to establish.

As I currently navigate through my job at [COMPANY_NAME], working across a wide array of projects ranging from NLP-based chatbots, new age web-based survey applications to developing system architecture and mentoring new hires, I truly believe it is time to take the next step for achieving my ambitions.

Keeping this narrative in mind, I believe the Master of Computer Science Program at [UNIVERSITY_NAME] is the exact ingredient I require to achieve my professional goals of becoming a Machine Learning Engineer.
