SOP Sample for MS in Computer Science in USA - Early Career
Sample SOP for Masters in Computer Science in the USA, tailored for early career applicants with a mechatronics background.
Statement of Purpose
Name: [NAME] Course: Masters in Computer Science Country: USA
Computer Science is shaping the future of the world. Computer science can be applied in any discipline to take it to the next level. There are two sides to a coin. When I look at the digital world of information technology I see electronic hardware on one side and, on the other I see software. Which one is more important? One cannot exist without the other and yet, at times, I see the balance tilting overwhelmingly in favor of software. This is what prompts me to complement my knowledge after successfully completing my degree course in Mechatronics. My background in Mechatronics will be an added advantage to apply computer science in a different direction.
# What I wish to study and why this program
My B.Tech in Mechatronics puts me in a unique position to handle both software and hardware but I do lack higher programming skills. I did learn C, Mindshift, Javascript, MongoDB, Data analytics, Python and Java through online courses but I need professional training and qualifications to leverage my background in mechatronics with software development skills and work thereafter in a niche position. I wish to delve deeper into software development, understanding projects and managing them, use of cutting edge technologies like blockchain and artificial intelligence and much more. This program, I find, offers high level training in key areas that are of vital interest to me to further my career prospects and achieve my goals.
# Why this university and this country
Given my background I had to choose a university with care with special attention to the course structure and other facilities. I have chosen this university over others due to its excellent rating, academic faculty, facilities for research, applied project work and interaction with top industry cadres are the other attractions of this university. I will certainly get a fresh experience of interaction with students from other parts of the world and be exposed to new ways of thought. This innovative thinking is a hallmark of the USA, a possible reason why it is so much more advanced than the rest of the world in technologies. It is fertile ground for those who wish to advance in their careers or in their studies. They get the best opportunities and the best infrastructure. Time matters and when the underlying infrastructure is the finest then a student can learn much more. It will be time well spent here in the USA.
# Experience
I graduated in 2020 but due to the ongoing pandemic I could only land a job in January 2021 at [COMPANY]. I worked as an assistant system engineer for 7 months up to July 2021 and then stopped. I wanted to prepare for further education. I learnt my shortcoming while working and wanted to address these before I really settled down in a career. Prior to this I interned with several companies such as [COMPANY], [COMPANY] and [COMPANY], tasked with handling specific projects for a period of one month at each place.
# Classes/projects
Two projects I would like to talk about here are: Electric Discharge Machine (EDM) that I did in January 2020 and prior to this the project on Electricity Generation Using Speed Breakers. For me the EDM project was interesting and challenging since I focused on the mechanical-electrical-electronic side with improved software control leading to precision and flexibility.
Our college curriculum focused more on the electronics and mechanical side as well as robotics. Considering that software is equally important for me and my future line of work I took on extra courses in Java, Python, C++ and Data Analytics Using Pandas. I have a good grounding in these topics and I will be able to pursue the MS course in computer science without any major difficulties.
# Leadership/community experience
I completed my studies and was at a loose end during the pandemic. I decided to organize our local residents to start supply chain of food and necessities for those in need. It was an eye opener since I saw a side of life to which I was not exposed and it taught me to be grateful for what I have and to do my bit for the community.
# Values I bring to the institution
I consider myself as a multi-faceted individual. I love mechanical things and electronics too. I also invest in shares and stocks and actively do online trading. I draw inspiration from various aspects of life, even sci-fi movies with their projections in the future. I like to think ahead and be ready. I hope to do the university proud with my academic performance and with my on-campus contributions to enrich the cultural life. In future I will look back with gratitude to this institution for helping me onwards in my career.
# Career goals and how this course will help
I am uniquely positioned inasmuch as I have a background in mechatronics—blend of electronics and mechanicals—which I shall now reinforce with expertise in computer science. I hope to work in strategic automation section and develop this field in India. I may start at a junior level but with my capabilities I will progress to the post of a team leader of head of department in a couple of years. This is just a precursor to my long term plan to set up my own automation products development company and accelerate this sector in India, benefiting my country, my people and my family to who, incidentally, I owe much. I shall equally be indebted to this course for giving me skills and expertise in an area in which I am deficient and thus round off my capabilities.
