SOP Sample for MS in Computer Science in USA
Sample Statement of Purpose for MS Computer Science applicants targeting US universities with a research focus in data science and AI.
It is my ardent belief that the key to success lies in perseverance and this belief of mine has always motivated me to push my limits. My application to the MS CS program of [UNIVERSITY] is in pursuit of excellence in the field of computer science. I have long been vested in the very intriguing branch of data science, Machine Learning. Given my penchant for knowledge, be it academics or otherwise, I have decided to pursue an MS in Computer Science and then become a full stack developer. Having adequately developed my technical and professional competencies during my undergraduate studies, I humbly believe that I have the correct blend of soft skills, desire, and technical proficiency that is needed to be a dedicated full stack developer who participates in research-oriented programs of new technologies. And to achieve this, I believe studying at your university will be the best way forward.
Growing up, math and computer science were my favorite subjects. While I loved developing DIY projects such as an automatic railway gate system in science, I also enjoyed working on Logo, Q Basic, and other basic computer programming languages in school. Even when immersed in performing well in academics, I made sure to participate in extracurricular activities like singing, dancing, and acting. I was part of the school cricket team. While these extracurricular activities helped me become confident on the stage, the game that I had to play amongst a team built on my team skills and has in parallel taught me learning from my losses, a lesson I will always keep close to my heart and mind.
Given my affinity for computer programming, the choice of selecting a major for my undergraduate program was an easy decision. I enrolled for a Bachelor of Technology in Information Technology. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about this field which had captivated my interest from a very young age. Even though I enjoyed learning all subjects, my favorite subjects were Data structures and algorithms, Python, Java, Machine Learning.
Looking to build practical knowledge, I took a keen interest in projects and internships. My first project was during my internship at [COMPANY]. For this project "Data leakage detection system", I used Java to provide security in the organizations where data leakage occurs. I also did a few basic projects on web development as a part of this internship. For my next project "SMS encryption using AES", I used Java, and AES algorithms and used the Cipher-SMS protocol to develop the application.
During the Covid induced lockdown, my alma mater gave us an opportunity for online mentorship called "FACE". After completing this program, we had to work on a project. I chose to work on "House Price Prediction" and used Machine Learning, and Python to predict the price that is required to build a house. My most recent project has been "Missing child identification using deep learning". While working on this project, I did exhaustive research, learned about the KNN, CNN algorithms, and others that were used for analysis, and implemented them. Though I faced initial hurdles while developing the UI, I overcame them by trying different alternatives and am proud to say that this project won the 'Gold' award in the [EVENT_NAME], an international innovation show. I also participated in a plethora of seminars on new technologies such as AI, ML, and data science to further augment my knowledge.
I like sharing my knowledge and have presented numerous seminars on technical and non-technical topics in college. Apart from helping me share my knowledge, this also honed my technical skills, gave me immense confidence, and improved my communication and soft skills. To improve my technical skills, I also practiced programming on online websites and took help from college professors to gain proficiency. I continued my extracurricular activities and was part of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) and achieved a 'B' certificate. I was also a part of an NGO project named [NGO_NAME], where we traveled twice a week to a government school in a remote area to teach the children and also set up a small library in the school.
After completing my undergraduate program, I was recruited by [COMPANY] - a global leader in IT services, as an Assistant software engineer. After joining the job, I had cleared more exams and was eligible for an incentive. I joined [COMPANY] 3 months back and am currently being trained on the Spring Boot framework. Learning to create microservices and watching them interact has been a great learning experience. I am awaiting the time I will be assigned a project to work on. Even though I am enjoying my training at [COMPANY] and am doing well here, my desire to pursue a Master's in computer science and thereby explore more in the area of Machine Learning is the motivator behind my application to [UNIVERSITY]. Through this Master's program, I wish to gain more knowledge and develop advanced problem-solving skills, and do research to enhance my skills.
The Master's program at your university is tailored to meet my interests, as it covers a plethora of courses, such as Artificial Intelligence and Data Science under a single umbrella. With state of art facilities, research labs, and highly qualified faculty, I will be able to confidently build a solid foundation of machine learning and its applications. The motto of your esteemed university is what sets it apart from the rest. "Teach, research, serve, care." I feel like I have lived my life in a way that I might as well be emulating this motto. Be it teaching on behalf of an NGO or serving under NCC, I was always striving to give back to society. To see that research has as much of an importance as teaching was refreshing. It made me believe the numerous research opportunities I would be exposed to under the likes of experienced professors in your university.
Looking forward to a fruitful association with [UNIVERSITY].
