Sample SOP for a mid-career applicant applying to MS Computer Science programs in Canada, highlighting experience and academic background.
Statement of Interest
Growing up, I perceived how hard my parents work. My father who works as a Senior Manager in [COMPANY], inculcated in me an interest in computers specifically in Data Manipulation Softwares. Through my interest in playing around with data, my curiosity about Computers escalated. While my father taught me all about computers, my mother, a maths teacher, made sure my basics were always clear. She made learning topics like Trigonometry and Geometry fun. I also participated in many extra-curricular activities and won several prizes in school. I was the lead pianist in school, directed school plays for annual performances, edited the music and created documentary videos for different events. I obtained 88.4% in my 10th grade and 67.69% in the 12th grade.
I taught myself how to create and edit videos as a third-grader, which helped me a lot, later in life. My interest in playing games attracted me to Game Development and Programming. This is why I chose IT Engineering for my under graduation. Being the first woman in my family to pursue Software Engineering, was also another excellent reason. During the 4-year course, my favorite subjects were Artificial Intelligence, Computer Graphics & Virtual Reality, Database Management System, Internet of Things, C and Python Programming.
Apart from academic studies, I completed many projects. My main project was a Digital Retail Interface using Machine Learning and Virtual Reality. Our paper on this topic was presented at the International E-Conference on Advances in Information Technology and Research - ICAITR 2021. Another one of my projects was based on IoT Technology that provided assistance for the Visually Challenged people that alerted them through a mobile application for any obstacles in their way. I then completed a project titled 'Society Management System' - A Web Application. The project that I am the proudest of is 'Tender Mitra'. We got a chance to change the existing through a National level - Smart India Hackathon powered by the Prime Minister of India. My team and I created a computer application that installed all the needed applications simultaneously and altered all the software changes required for the vendor's system with a ChatBot and SMS Alerting system. This project was judged the best and my team received Rs. 50,000 as prize money. I was also featured twice in different National newspapers for my efforts. I have also completed many Game Development projects using the knowledge that I gained online, based on Unity 3D - A Game Development. Some of them are Cube's Run, Balance Racing, Terminal Hacker, Food Smasher and Laser Defender.
To understand technical topics like Artificial Intelligence and Game Programming in C#, I enrolled myself in multiple online courses powered by [PLATFORM], [PLATFORM]. In this quest, I realized that the best way to learn was to create projects and explore the different tools in the software and functions in the programming languages to get in-depth knowledge. Hence, I applied to internships and gained information by working in the real world.
My three internships include Video Content Creation at [COMPANY], where I created multiple videos for a company that was related to Lifestyle. My second internship at [COMPANY] was for Application Development. I worked in Python and created scripts to automate emails using automation testing tools like Selenium. My third internship was at [COMPANY] for Game Development. I added features and characteristics to an existing game called - Citizens of Rome: Dynasty, a Game developed using a Javascript framework - Vue.js.
I also have done an array of co-curricular activities. I am the proud organizer and initiator of the 'Each One Teach One' in college, where every student got a chance to teach other students a topic of their interest. I kick-started it by taking the first lecture, which was on 'Game Development'. At the start of the pandemic, I created '[CHANNEL_NAME]' with 7 other engineering students which is a YouTube Channel with 80+ high-quality animated explainer videos for students in 10th grade. Many students have praised us for this and within a year, we hit record-breaking analytics of over 1,00,000 views and 1000 Subscribers. The comments on the videos made me realize that our channel acted as a bridge between teachers struggling to find tools to help students understand the content and students who were trying their best to understand their syllabus and/or who had limited exposure to technology. I realized that when planned properly, everything could be achieved before the target deadline.
My other activities include being the Digital Editor for the Rotaract club of my college as well as Organizing Head and Technical Committee Member for the Information Technology Student Association (ITSA). I also edited the College Departmental E-Newsletter for 3 years. Despite a wide array of engagements, I maintained a CGPA of 8.79 and was the Department Topper of our College.
After completing Engineering, I joined [COMPANY] as an Assistant System Engineer - Trainee in July 2021. Though I am applying to a university abroad, I wanted to get as much experience as I could before starting the next phase of my life.
I wish to pursue a Master's in Computer Science to learn advanced technologies, so that I can apply the theoretical knowledge that I garner during my course in real life and acquire skills to build amazing applications that would help the world at large.
I'm looking to advance my career, and a degree from [UNIVERSITY] with guidance from revered Educators like [PROFESSOR] and [PROFESSOR] will help me in getting excellent knowledge of the subject. The University's official website and reviews of former students have corroborated this. Because [UNIVERSITY] is so highly regarded, any future employer will know that I have an advantage over others since I would have acquired outstanding skills, knowledge, and personal qualities. [UNIVERSITY] will undoubtedly be an excellent launch pad for my future.
