SOP Sample for MS in Civil Engineering in Canada - Fresher Profile
Sample SOP for MS Civil Engineering applicants in Canada with internship experience and fresher profile.
Statement of Purpose
Respected Sir/Ma'am,
I am [APPLICANT_NAME], a student from India who completed my undergraduate program in one of the core engineering branches, civil engineering, from [UNIVERSITY_1]. As I am about to complete my under-graduation studies, I am thinking of pursuing my master's degree at your prestigious University.
I completed my school level education, secondary in 2016 and higher secondary in 2018 from [HIGH_SCHOOL_1], [CITY_1], Gujarat, which comes under [EDUCATION_BOARD_1]. Following that, I pursued my Bachelor's degree from [INSTITUTE_1], which comes under [UNIVERSITY_1], [CITY_2], Gujarat. I am currently pursuing my undergraduate degree, having my CPI 9.8 and CGPA 9.72 till semester 6.
In my undergraduate studies till now, I have come across various subjects that have caught my interest such as Design of Reinforced Concrete Structure, Design of Steel Structure, Earthquake Engineering, Structural Analysis (Strength of Materials), Engineering Graphics & Design and many more. However, the subjects in the last two years of my studies such as Design of Prestressed Concrete Structure, Construction Project Management and concepts like Sustainable Development and Green Building made my goals clear about the specialization that I am interested in and want to pursue in my further studies.
Apart from the subjects that I have studied as a part of my curriculum, I have also taken keen interest in increasing my knowledge and developing various skills like learning software such as AutoCAD and Revit as a part of my internship program by taking part in various technical and non-technical events such as Bridge It, Theodo-Lit-O (theodolite training event), treasure hunt competition, and poster making.
My personal interests include sports, running, painting, art and craft, dance, designing, travelling to different places, and swimming, among many others.
Throughout my graduation, I have also done various projects on different topics as a part of my course such as a Mini Project on "Development of Low-Carbon Concrete with Engineered Fillers," which was my project title for the Canada Internship program organized by '[ORGANIZATION_1]'. However, due to the ongoing pandemic situation, the internship program was cancelled. So, I decided to carry out research by myself at the institute level. My Design Engineering project was about a study on rain water harvesting system, initiated by a villager named [PERSON_1] at [VILLAGE_1], Rajasthan, in which he created pits named chawkas to slow down and collect the run-off water, from which he managed to save water for the whole village even at the end of hot summer.
I have also done some valuable internships at [COMPANY_1] constructions, where I learned to study engineering drawings on software such as AutoCAD, Revit and SketchUp, and learned to design engineering drawings on these software, various local measuring units, and standard measurement of different building elements, which hopefully will help me further to increase my designing skill set and knowledge in the civil engineering branch.
# What has led me to do my higher education in civil engineering?
Since my childhood, I have been a creative person. I had my interest in creating, modelling and crafting. Also, along with this, I had excellence in mathematical skills. Seeing this, my mother always opted civil engineering for me, not forcing but giving me exploration in the field of civil engineering. My mother used to give me certain information and news about new projects being carried out by our relatives. This grew my interest in civil engineering, as the field of civil engineering aligned with my interests.
Apart from that, I have always been interested in managing things and finding out a creative approach to any problems and also an approach to make things better and more efficient than before. I believe only higher education in this field can give me that wonderful satisfaction and opportunity to become better in this field. I am willing to face all the challenges coming my way. My higher education in Civil Engineering will prepare me to become a qualified professional who can contribute towards the sustainable infrastructural developments in the country.
# Why I finalized [UNIVERSITY_2] as my institute?
[UNIVERSITY_2] has a very well reputed civil engineering department with an extremely distinguished faculty, great academic activity and fantastic lab and research facilities. Apart from that, [UNIVERSITY_2] provides me with the course of Master in Civil Engineering - Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure, which aligns with my future goals and also includes all subjects from my field of interest, which is the main factor I have finalized this Master's course from [UNIVERSITY_2].
After researching various universities in Canada, I came to the conclusion that the program which I was searching as two different fields, I found a perfect blend of the course which is structure, which I have had a vision to pursue since long back, and sustainable infrastructure concept in one course. I am intensely keen for this particular program. Also, I saw the reviews and recognition [UNIVERSITY_2] has gotten in the past years. It is considered as one of the best universities in Canada.
Also, apart from being Canada's capital city, Ottawa is also one of the most beautiful cities in Canada, which will surely make my student experience much more interesting.
# My expectation about the program
The first and foremost expectations that I have from Masters of Civil Engineering - Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure from [UNIVERSITY_2] is to receive the best educational as well as campus life experience. I want to gain as much possible knowledge, both theoretical and practical, before entering in it professionally.
Civil Engineering, according to my perspective, is the only field where one's work can be seen and felt directly by the senses and anything done stays forever to the credit. Civil Engineering course and field require a tremendous amount of patience, management skills and perseverance to succeed.
# Conclusion
My under graduation has played a major role to clear my fundamentals. I learned that I have barely scratched the surface and there's just plenty of knowledge to explore. Throughout my under graduation, my professors, mentors as well as my seniors have guided me towards enhancing my area of interests in subjects such as Design of Reinforced Concrete Structure, Design of Steel Structure, Earthquake Engineering, Structural Analysis (Strength of Materials), and Engineering Graphics & Design. In order to strengthen and excel my limitations, I want to pursue a master's course in a university which is provided with not only distinguished facilities and excellent laboratory facilities but also, of course, high reputation globally.
The fast emerging global scenario in the field of civil engineering and quality of education are the two things based on which I decided to pursue my further education in Canada. After contributing a lot of time researching through every little aspect from the list of best universities, I am convinced that [UNIVERSITY_2] is the only university I can think of that satisfies all the aspects I am concerned about and more to pursue my masters. I am applying to your university after doing a lot of research keeping in mind highly eminent faculties, quality of education, high opportunities and high global reputation. I hope you will grant me the privilege of pursuing my Master's degree in your institution.
Yours sincerely,
[APPLICANT_NAME]
