SOP Sample for MS in Biomedical Sciences in the UK
Sample SOP for a master's in biomedical sciences in the UK, ideal for fresh graduates with internship experience.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
[APPLICANT_NAME]
I was in 9th standard when I first came across the concept of genes. It was so fascinating to understand how each and every cell in our body had its own unique DNA material that could affect so many different characteristics in a human. Getting to know about how "Dolly sheep" was cloned left me awestruck. It was then I began to realize my enthusiasm towards biotechnology applications. When I had to choose my subjects for 12th standard, unfortunately biotechnology as a subject was not offered in my school. But I was so determined and clear about my interests in this field, that I changed my school to where I was able to take up biotechnology along with other subjects like physics, chemistry and biology.
For my under graduation, I pursued B.Tech in Biotechnology from [UNIVERSITY_NAME], [CITY]. During the course of study "Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering", "Genetic Disorders and Personalized Medicines" and "Stem Cells and Healthcare" were the subjects that evoked my keen interest. During my first year, I did my summer training from [INSTITUTION_NAME] in their Genetics Department located in [CITY]. I got a lot of exposure during this hands-on training where I learned techniques involved to extract DNA from blood samples like cell lysis, centrifugation, PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA quantification to name some, and then later analyze them for any presence of mutation for further genetic counseling. My undergraduate program had good lab programs which acted as a catalyst to my desire of assimilating to the maximum from the coursework.
For the final term paper, I was working on "The Analysis of Botanicals Using Computational Tools for Cervical Cancer" and "Stem Cells for Regenerative Medicine, Cancer Therapy and Drug Discovery". My keen interest has been to work on the enhancement of the cancer therapies and antineoplastic drugs. Cancer is a leading cause of death in both developed and developing countries, and is an increasing medical burden worldwide, we need better drugs and treatments to cure it. My focus is on how we can get a better drug discovery system, using different in-silico tools and make it more cost effective. Also, how the stem cells should be brought more to light for cancer therapies and regenerative medicine. I've always felt biotechnology was not just a tool that benefits an individual, but also the entire community and society at large. I want to be a part of the existing race to create a more scientifically advanced tomorrow and I envision graduate studies as a path towards my advancement in this direction.
As an undergraduate in Biotechnology Engineering, I look forward to refining my knowledge and skills in my areas of interest through Masters study, which will provide me a platform to engage in intensive and innovative research and development. I believe my M.S. study will serve to give direction to my goal of a career as a researcher. Looking at the rate at which cancer is affecting the population and the challenges being faced to treat it, as the current therapies and drugs have drastic after effects. Also, the current drug discovery process from preclinical testing to animal model development creates disadvantages that must be dramatically improved to develop more predictable approaches that are physiologically and pharmacologically relevant. Therefore, I want to work on the above issues and provide a more efficient cancer therapy and drug development using stem cells and computational tools respectively.
My ultimate aim is to utilize the knowledge and training which I receive through my Master's degree to work in the biotech industry where I will look to hone and perfect my practical skills before eventually starting my own Research and Development Company. I hope, in the future, to create an effectual technology which will add value to human life.
To realize these dreams, I need to broaden my horizons, receive both training and guidance. I believe that I will receive just this through a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences research from [UNIVERSITY_NAME], which will provide me with a combined expertise in scientific knowledge and practical skills needed for a career in biotechnology within companies and research organizations. This course offers everything I am looking for to enhance my knowledge and skills. The flexibility to choose your research area from a wide range of suggested projects or to work with academic staff to design your own research project is something that will help me gain knowledge about biotechnological applications but also be able to work individually on a variety of tasks around relevant research topics, and professional graduate attributes. I am looking forward to doing my masters from your well-regarded university as it offers an exciting opportunity to undertake and manage a research project, allowing me to gain valuable laboratory experience and forge important relationships in the professional sphere.
I sincerely hope that by associating with your University, I will be able to give back in return as much as I will gain in my own knowledge under the guidance of experts from the industry. I am confident that, if admitted, I would surely satisfy your expectations and fulfill my ambition. I hope that this statement of purpose will merit me a place in your institution.
