Statement of Purpose

Curiosity and creativity have led me to a lot of wonderful experiences in my life. Since childhood, I have been fascinated by everything in nature, especially the vast sky of stars that I used to observe every night. Occasionally, I was able to observe iridium flares, which made me wonder about the magnificence of human creations and how vast and unknown the universe was to common man. Older adults in my village used to say that vaccines and some tablets provided by my school were of no use and that these were only government and private company schemes to run tests of their medicine on the population rather than being actual cures as they claim. So I have always been curious how certain attenuated viruses would help fight against viruses and diseases. Later, I came to know about our immune system's beautiful organization and how this microscopic world inside a human protects the person from various diseases. I began to fall for the world of biology but knew physics, chemistry, mathematics, and the other subjects taught in school too were essentialities because, without one, the other cannot progress; every subject is linked together. Thus, I chose the branch of my study, Biomedical Engineering in the Department of Biotechnology and Medical Engineering, [UNIVERSITY NAME], India (THE World Engineering and Technology (2020) ranking 601-800 & NIRF (National ranking) ranking 16).

Globalization has allowed mobility to humans all over the world. Thus, diseases that can be spread through human contact have the potential to spread worldwide in a couple of hours. Also, COVID-19 pandemic times have taught us that it is very much essential to have portable Point Of Care devices available at every site to diagnose and give results in a short period. Technological developments like integrating electrochemical biosensors with Lab-On-Chip microfluidic devices, paper biosensors, etc. are a feasible path to make this possible. These would also cut down reagents costs and be a cheap way to diagnose diseases in poor and middle-income countries where neither proper facilities nor skilled personnel is present. This could lead to the proper diagnosis of diseases like cancer, which can reduce the costs of treatment for it by a huge amount rather than treating it after it progresses further.

These factors interested me a lot. As I began to search more, I even came across a paper-based microfluidic device that can perform ELISA tests, an automated microfluidic platform constructed to test and screen drug effects on tumor organoids, and about companies such as [COMPANY NAME] creating devices to personalize healthcare and [PRODUCT NAME], a lab-free rapid RT-PCR test for COVID-19 while global companies like [COMPANY NAME] are also focusing on Precision Therapy and personalized healthcare using patient twinning. These really amazed me and made me want to do some work in this field if possible as I felt I definitely wanted to be a part of something so big of a revolution in healthcare sector while also I could provide to the society too in my own ways if I could help in the development of such devices.

Due to COVID, our campus closed, and we were forced to return to our homes. Thus, I was not able to get any hands-on experience in the labs in our department. Currently, I am a final year Biomedical Engineering student in the 7th semester at [UNIVERSITY NAME]. While staying at home I tried reaching out to professors all over India for projects to work on fields I was interested to be a part of. Thus, during the months of May to August, I was guided by [PROFESSOR NAME] from the [SCHOOL NAME], [UNIVERSITY NAME] (401–500th World University Rankings 2020) in working on a content for publishing in a scientific journal on Electrochemical Biosensor designs used for detecting SARS-CoV-2 virus. I wish to create and come up with innovative ideas for medical devices. Thus, recently I am also working under a professor at my institute on creating an insole design for gait analysis.

Now, I wish to start my own company in the future in my country specialized in medical devices maintenance, exporting and importing and ensuring quality healthcare is being provided in all of the hospitals and that the healthcare workers are aware about the wonderful new technologies that are available in the world right now for easy diagnosis and treatment of the patients. I searched a lot in finding suitable and unique courses that would aid me in understanding requirements with which I should be equipped to embark on such a career journey. Thus, a masters degree from your institute in this special biomedical course on (course name) will make me well-versed with various subjects, new technologies and innovations in the healthcare sector which would make me capable enough and provide me with a thrust to start on with my career path. I really believe and expect that your program will be a key element and steppingstone to my career goals and aspirations and I truly believe that my curious, creative and observant nature will be an asset to the innovation and research world through the medium of your institution.
