SOP Sample for MS in Aerospace Engineering in Canada
Sample SOP for Master's in Aerospace Engineering applicants in Canada with a fresh graduate profile.
Statement of Purpose
Having completed my undergraduate program in Aeronautical Engineering, I have learned about working on aircraft that operate within the earth's atmosphere. However, I now wish to broaden my knowledge and learn about designing and working of aircraft and spacecraft in the earth's atmosphere as well as outside the earth's atmosphere. This is where a Master's in Aerospace Engineering comes into the picture. This program will enable me to get multi-disciplinary training in the field and help me get a step closer to my dream of becoming an aerospace engineer.
With this master's degree, I wish to do research on current aerospace industry problems and work towards solving them. I also wish to explore space relentlessly, get to know much about astrodynamics, and become a researcher in the fields of dynamics and aerospace propulsion. I wish to research in the field of optimized designs and structural bodies. In the long term, I would like to see myself as a lead aerospace engineer and my research papers should stand as a reference to the young researchers.
My rendezvous with aeronautics and consecutively with aerospace engineering started as a natural precociousness of a child - when a politician visited our small village in a helicopter. Seeing a helicopter for the first time in my life was an experience and ignited my curiosity in aeronautics. Seeing my deep-seated curiosity in airplanes, my father took me to an airport to see off his friend flying to a foreign country. It was again my first chance to see flight after flight take-off and it was then that I made up my mind to study the exciting discipline that made airplanes take flight.
Coming from a family of modest means - my mother is a vegetable vendor while my father is a small-time private employee - I knew that getting a good education was my only path to success. I went on to pass my secondary and senior high school with a CGPA of 9.3 and 97.2% respectively. My interest in maths and science, as well as aeronautics, had become evident by the time I had completed my senior secondary and I enrolled for my dream degree - B.Tech (Hons.), Aeronautical Engineering at [UNIVERSITY_NAME].
To say that I found the undergraduate program interesting would be an understatement. In fact, I absolutely adored learning about every aspect of the subject, especially subjects such as aerodynamics, fluid mechanics, structural mechanics, and aero propulsion. The medium of instruction at my alma mater was English and I lagged my peers when it came to communicating with my professors. However, I took the challenge head-on and not only worked on my core academics but also worked on my communication skills.
Apart from these, projects and internships were an important part of the program. My major project is "Numerical Investigation on Impingement Of Shock Waves With The Cavity Shear Layer Of Military Aircraft". This project aimed to study the adaptable and abrupt changes in dynamic coefficients of air due to shockwave interference with a shear layer at supersonic speeds which led to the numerical analysis, which permits the addressing of the linear instability problem. Normally this project would have taken six months to complete. However, we had to do it in 3 months and to everyone's amazement, we were able to complete it within the deadline.
I have also worked on another project "Analytical Investigation on Sandwich Plates With Functionally Graded Carbon Nanotubes Reinforced Composites" which investigated the behavior of sandwich plates with functionally graded carbon nanotube (FG-CNT) reinforced composite sheets under uniform compression based on the first-order shear deformation plate theory. My one-month internship at [INSTITUTE_NAME] helped me build on my designing skills and analysis using CATIA and ANSYS. I am currently pursuing a Master's certification program in CFD (computational fluid dynamics) from [ORGANIZATION_NAME] - an online platform.
Having completed my undergraduate program, I now wish to study the field of Aerospace Engineering and therefore my application to [UNIVERSITY_NAME]. Canada is an excellent choice when it comes to pursuing higher studies. The country not only is home to some of the finest universities in the world but also offers a comparatively lower cost of education and living. It is a student-friendly country that ranks high on quality of life too.
After having gone through numerous universities and their master's programs, I find [UNIVERSITY_NAME] to be the ideal fit for me and believe that it will help me realize my dreams and aspirations. The highly researched and updated curriculum, the choice of core courses and electives, and the various practical learning initiatives of this program all excite me and convince me of the unparalleled learning I will have here. The opportunity to learn from faculty who are involved in cutting-edge research in aerospace will help me gain an edge.
I bring with me my proven academic excellence, my strong interest in aerospace engineering, and my diligence in my work. I assure the committee that if given a chance, I would prove to be a valuable addition to the student body.
