Statement of Purpose
Growing up in a family background where everyone is either an MBA or wants to become one, as a child I never thought I could pursue a career in some other field. There is still this mindset in areas of India that the girl child should be married as early as possible after her minimum education. Unfortunately, there has also been constant pressure from my parents and relatives for me to get married as soon as I finish my undergraduate degree. Another reason for this pressure is because my Dad went through a kidney transplant a few years back, therefore, he wants to see me settled and married before his eyes. It made me feel stuck, helpless and the urge to ask this question repeatedly: 'Am I not allowed to take decisions for my future?' 'Am I not allowed to pursue further studies and become financially independent so that I can live my life on my terms?' This made me even more motivated that I have to prove myself that I can make a successful career in Designing. I remember when I was in class 2, I had participated in an inter-class pottery competition and after finishing all the tasks I used to go and help out others. I didn't care that I might lose—that is the amount of love I had for Art.
After getting admission into [UNIVERSITY_NAME] pursuing B.Com honours, where I studied Accounts, Maths, and Tax, where it was all textbooks and lectures, it was that time I realised that I don't belong here. Being an over-thinker, I used to worry about all of these things which made me suddenly start sweating and shivering, which later turned out that I suffered from Anxiety.
During the 3 years of my College, I made sure to utilise this opportunity and participated in various competitions related to business quiz, drawing and t-shirt painting competitions, and even in Inter-college Volleyball and Table Tennis tournaments, which also helped me make new friends. But as soon as I graduated I felt lost as I had decided to take up designing full time but had almost no work experience.
The only way to move forward was to spend a few months learning the required software and designing skills, after which I applied at various agencies and finally started working as a Graphic Design intern at [COMPANY_NAME], a wedding organising company based in [CITY]. The internship turned out to be a great decision as it not only made me gather more knowledge related to Graphic designing but also taught me the importance of believing in one's dreams and eventually made me feel more confident.
A few months went by and things started to fall in place and I landed another Graphic Designing Internship offer at [COMPANY_NAME], an advertising and marketing agency based in Mumbai. It was at this moment I was glad that I chose this path where I finally felt I belonged. I worked for 6 months under this organisation without taking a single leave day and nourished my skills in communication through regular meetings and project plans, learned the importance of keeping calm during workload pressure and time constraints, the value of time management, and helping other colleagues. I helped various clients to achieve their monthly goals by creating design templates and strategies based on their needs and market trends. I got appreciated by my friends, employees and family. My family gradually started to understand that I am very passionate towards Designing and can make a living out of it.
This whole time after doing Internships and Freelancing, I finally was able to stand in a position to talk to my parents about getting a further Postgraduate or Masters degree in Designing. I gave a few entrance exams for colleges in India and was offered admission for a Postgraduate UI/UX design degree in [UNIVERSITY_NAME], Mumbai. I was all set to pack my bags, leaving my comfort zone and start a new journey in a different city where everything was going to be new. But life had other plans. There was suddenly a very high rise in Covid cases across India and everyone in my family—both of my parents, brother, including my 86-year-old Grandmother—were infected.
At that moment the only priority was my family. I remember working day and night preparing meals and doing house chores. Amidst all of this I missed the deadline for submitting the online fees for my admission. I was devastated. It reminded me of the initial times where I felt demotivated and helpless. A few days passed and thankfully all my family members recovered. Taking this as a challenge, I promised myself to work even harder and this time apply to foreign universities where I can learn and strive higher. And ever since, it has been my dream to pursue a Master's in your prestigious university where I believe I can grow wings and fly even higher.
Having decided that I will engage in the pursuit of a career in Graphic designing, gain more entrepreneurial and creative experience, and knowledge about technical skills through this masters course, I aspire to open my own business offering branding, printing, illustrations and more, also keeping in mind sustainability and the environment. All of this can only be accomplished if I get a chance to be a part of your esteemed [UNIVERSITY_NAME].
I thoroughly understand the kind of dedication, perseverance and resolve that a masters program calls for. I would love to explore new opportunities in designing and research during my studies at the University. Believing that I have the ability and motivation to successfully pursue the program while contributing to the community service and other activities, I sincerely hope to gain admission into the university.
