STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Life and the fact that matter can either be alive or dead were revelations when I was just a young child. I could not fathom not being alive, and hence I set off on my journey of figuring out life. When I came across the existence of living organisms that I could not even perceive, I was awestruck, and when the realization hit me that these organisms out-populated even us humans, or for the fact any organism I could see, a whole new world was opened to me, that was waiting for me. Therefore, with a zeal to learn in-depth about this field, I opted for biology as my major in intermediate. I was fortunate to get exposed to several interesting topics in biology, but the chapter, namely "Microbes in Daily Life" intrigued me a lot as it allowed me to know about these tiny unseen creatures that are helping us in a million ways. They can live in extreme conditions, which we can't even imagine. There's no looking back after my acquaintance with microbes, and I decided to continue my education in this field only.
The things that fascinated me about microbiology are how small changes in any component affect a vast population of microorganisms, and these changes often go unnoticed by humans until repercussions appear. During my bachelor's in microbiology, chemistry, and botany, I was introduced to various species of microorganisms. Some of which are useful for humans, and some are responsible for causing lethal diseases. I did an intensive course in clinical research and data analysis, which dealt with public health and data collection on the effectiveness of different drugs, both pre and post their release in the market. One such product we examined was [PRODUCT_NAME], a probiotic drink manufactured by [COMPANY_NAME]. The research on this product and the examination of its claims of improving your gut microbiome led me to study the role of gut microbiota in the human body. I worked on a thesis proving the connection between gut microbiota and human intelligence. I was astounded by the role of different gut microbes in producing different neurotransmitters and their effect on our gut-brain axis, which regulates both normal brain functions and cognition in humans. Culturing bacteria was my favourite aspect, and the media components and how a tiny change in their concentration may wipe out an entire culture piqued my interest. In addition, I had the opportunity to work on a research project for [COMPANY_NAME], the world's largest brewing company, in my final year. I studied components used in drinks, manufacturing processes, and all the food safety regulations and food purity checks that a product requires to pass the guidelines issued by the food regulatory authorities. Until my research, I had just studied the use of microorganisms in making wines and beers, but after that day, I was aware of the whole world of fermentation and bioreactors.
Moreover, during the latter years of my graduation, I gained knowledge about how food science enables us to make the most of our food supplies while minimizing waste. The majority of dietary ingredients are of biological origin. It is difficult to predict how they'll act during harvesting, processing, distribution, storage, and preparation. Though I have acquired fundamental knowledge of it, to dive deeper into its intricacies, pursuing a master's degree would prove to be fruitful for me as it will help me develop a deeper understanding of all major facets of the subject and facilitate extensive training in the same.
Apart from academics, I was also involved in various voluntary works. I worked as a volunteer at [HOSPITAL_NAME]. I organized medical camps in rural parts of [CITY], where attendees were educated about Naturopathy and Accu-pressure. This camp proved to be very beneficial for me as it helped me improve my communication and presentation skills. These voluntary works braced my confidence as well as communication, management, and leadership skills.

India is a vast country with over a billion mouths to feed, due to which food safety plays a major role in ensuring people meet the right nutritional requirements. My inclination towards the subject was proven to me when I studied the process of fermentation in wineries and breweries. I want to pursue a career in food science and quality control because it will allow me to integrate and apply knowledge from my previous disciplines of microbiology, engineering, chemistry, biology, and dietary habits to preserve, process, package, and distribute healthier food, which is affordable, appealing, and safe to eat. This course will equip me for career opportunities in food science such as quality control/assurance, laboratory analysis, product design/development, and food safety, catering to my holistic growth in this industry.
With the boom of globalization in the world, the economy has led to an explosion of processed food in the market, food whose sale and consumption has billions of stakeholders worldwide. Most of these stakeholders who seek to profit from this explosion have extremely monetary interests, leading them to cut corners and make their way into markets with substandard products. My position as food safety regulator will be pivotal in monitoring and availing quality food products and services to many people worldwide. This study will not only help humans but will also serve the needs of the planet and all the organisms that inhabit it.
I believe my love and passion for food services need intellectual and professional guidance. The curriculum provided by [UNIVERSITY_NAME] includes practical learning experience in an industrial setup and a food processing pilot plant supplementing all theoretical training.
