STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Electrical engineering is a subject which can be treated mathematically and the results to which can be predetermined from the available theoretical and practical data. Over the course of my life, there have been two chief forces which have steered me towards pursuing my undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering while specializing in Power System studies from [UNIVERSITY_1]. Ever since I was introduced to science in school, I was always drawn towards subjects like Physics and Mathematics. The desire to be involved in the practical implementation of these core concepts served as my primary motivation to pursue my undergraduate studies in Engineering.

I graduated from high school with distinction and was admitted into the Bachelor of Technology course in [UNIVERSITY_1] after securing an excellent rank in my entrance exam. After being exposed to different domains in the field of electrical engineering, I developed an interest in power systems which led me pursue an internship in my second year of engineering. My internship at [COMPANY_1] which take up government projects of constructing substations provided me with an outlook on the current state of India where power is not accessible in many of the rural areas. The challenges of providing power to the large population with such a diverse geography inspired me to study power systems engineering.

The education I received from my university nurtured my interest in the fields of studies related to power systems stability, protection, and control. In studying all the subjects related to Power Engineering, I could not only appreciate the complexity and difficulty involved in the analysis of power system behavior but also perceive the joy of the pragmatic knowledge derived from the pure application of Mathematics and Physics. One course on Smart Power Systems introduced me to the prospective fields on power system engineering which can be renovated and optimized to stay relevant with development in other fields of engineering.

Electrical Power Engineering is an evolving field. There is a persistent need for a more sustainable generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption pattern which is commensurate with the growing world population. Smart grids are also a major topic of interest for me as a student. The use of advanced metering devices, on-line security assessments to prevent power outages or blackouts are going to prove to be critical when catering to fluctuating loads and handling the variable RE generation.

Motivated to dig deeper into these areas, I chose my pre-final year project on the topic of Solar based UPS and High Voltage DC systems. This helped to strengthen my perception of various concepts like Wide Area Monitoring Techniques, consequences of integrating renewable energy with the grid and the importance of costumer participation in Demand Side Management. In addition to this I also developed an appreciation for the strategical thought which is involved in the making of various policies regarding power transmission and distribution. This further underscores the fact that power engineering is not just about developing newer technology but also about the economic feasibility of the projects.

My final year thesis project was centred around designing a multi-level inverter that reduced the harmonic distortions and increased power quality which could be used with solar panels or as a part of the grid. Growing popularity of solar generation among households and smaller communities have given birth to the new challenge of providing protection to micro-grid installations. Me and my teammates also did a detailed analysis on which configuration gives the least harmonic distortions and designed a 9-level multilevel diode clamped inverter with reduced switches for which we also authored a research paper named "Multilevel Inverter Configurations and THD Analysis".

Collaborative works, diverse projects and internship has propelled my inclination further towards Power Engineering. I believe comprehensive overview acquired during undergraduate studies and the pragmatic skills can be crowned only by extensive post-graduate study like the Master at Electrical and Computer Engineering at [UNIVERSITY_2]. Your institution has made huge strides in development of technologies for sustainability like fabrication of low-cost solar cells, which encourages me to pursue my postgraduate studies at your university.

After the completion of my postgraduate, my ambition thereafter is to contribute all that I have learned to improve Power system generation, transmission, and distribution in my country. India is growing at the rate of 7.2% GDP. There is a need for a bigger and more efficient system. I would like to contribute to the evolution of smarter, faster, and more efficient monitoring techniques combined with robust and reliable compensation devices which will, in turn increase the energy utilization efficiency patterns.

Therefore, studying at your university will stimulate me towards achieving my career goals by offering an extensive master's programme. I believe that my relentless interest with firm technical background makes me a potential candidate for admission at your institute. I thank you for this opportunity to express myself.
