Sample SOP for fresh graduates applying to MS Electrical & Computer Engineering programs in the US with internship experience.
Statement of Purpose
It isn't easy to believe that the world has progressed to where electronic items with high-speed and efficient CPUs are now commonplace. Like [NAME] states, "Change is the end result of all true learning"—a quote that stands close to my heart and has been my source of inspiration since childhood. My childhood passion for collecting microchips from old video games and RC cars sparked my interest in electronics. When I first studied logic gates in high school, I was astounded by how 0's and 1's could operate computers. This enthusiasm motivated me to delve deeper and learn more about the operation of electrical devices. I've always been interested in the intricate design and operation of microchips in electronic devices.
I want to present myself as an Indian resident interested in pursuing a Master's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from [UNIVERSITY]. My approach to information acquisition is defined by a well-balanced combination of curiosity and passion. This accrual of information, I believe, culminates in inventiveness—my ability to evolve as a technology-oriented professional and the numerous possibilities to improve my practical skills. After completing my bachelor's degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, I hope to further specialize in the same field as a natural extension to my undergraduate studies.
During B.Tech, I studied core electrical subjects like Electrical Machines, Power System Analysis, and Power Electronics and Electronics subjects like Electronic Devices, Communication (Digital & Analog), Digital Logic, and Microprocessors. I found profound interest in Control Systems, Microprocessors, Electronic Devices, Linear Integrated Circuits, Digital Electronics, and much more. I have also accomplished hands-on experience while working on projects. I was selected for the building of Tesla Tower for our National Science Exhibition. With the constant support of the mentors and team effort, we managed to gain 2nd prize in it. The experience remains close to my heart to date. It allowed me to understand that just theoretical knowledge was not enough but honing the practical aspects remains equally crucial when it comes to engineering.
Since elementary school, I've had an interest in mathematics and science. During my intermediate, I channeled my inclinations into the desired directions, majoring in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Throughout these years, my academic achievement has been above average. In 2013 and 2015, I received 86% and 75% marks in my 10th and 12th grades, respectively. When I was an undergrad student, I wanted to have an advantage over others. At first, I studied in the first year to get good grades. Still, in the second year, I was fascinated by the fundamentals and practical lab work in MATLAB and SIMULINK to design and analyze power systems, C++ and Python to code the algorithms, and the rich hardware to implement the algorithms. Slowly, I began to acquire more about the subject and go deeper into it. By the end of the third year, I was fascinated by how the world works and what depends on it.
During my undergraduate, I worked on a project titled "Automatic Object Sorting System" focused on creating a setup that will decrease human effort and succeeded to an extent by using the low-cost automation system (LAC) to avoid risk, improve accuracy, increase production speed, and reduce cycle time. In this setup, the concept is based on the sorting of objects based on physical considerations such as color, size, and shape.
Later to gain industry experience, I did an internship at [COMPANY] from May 2021 until October 2021, where I was given a position of project intern for embedded systems and automation. As a project intern/trainee, my primary responsibility was to manage and supervise administrative, technical, and financial aspects of assigned projects from clients. All the tasks I set were based on embedded systems, IoT with automation. I have worked on projects like Automatic Street Light Intensity Controller using microcontroller with motion and light detecting sensor and IoT-enabled smart doors to monitor body temperature and face mask detection. This initiative was taken about the COVID-19 situation and was in high demand at that time. I grasped a lot of the basic skills like C, Embedded C, Microcontroller programming for the firmware of the embedded systems, and Real-Time Operating System (RTOS).
Another internship I did was at [COMPANY]. My role was of Engineering Intern where I was working on Hybrid Electric Vehicle designing, its case studies, and its Techno-Commercial Analysis. Along with the learnings, I have also prepared a detailed report on the Techno-Commercial Analysis of the Electrical Auto-Rickshaw (Tuk-Tuk) case study in India. In this report, I analyzed and assessed design and construction, the environmental aspects of e-rickshaw, its current scenario, e-rickshaw services, explained techno-commercial analysis of case studies of e-rickshaw in different parts of India.
In supplement to my academic activities, I have been active in many clubs, such as the science, innovation, and culture clubs. I have organized and led many club events and workshops such as the [EVENT], [EVENT], [EVENT], and many others. In addition to organizing, I also participated in hackathons and workshops on artificial reality, cyber security, and embedded systems.
Apart from the academics and curricular activities, I also took up the sport (which I spent most of my free time doing), competing in the inter-regional table tennis championships, winning gold twice in a row, and taking a team of five to the national championships. In grade 12, I also participated in the national soccer championship, where I came third and won 1,00,000 rupees.
All these experiences made me realize my thirst for knowledge and learning new things, and getting deep into the concept for which I decided to continue my studies and considered doing a post-graduation degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at your university. Since my curriculum includes essential topics such as electrical machines, system analysis, power electronics, and electronics such as electronic devices, communications, digital logic, and microprocessors, I was confused about which course to take. I tried to contact different faculty members about their academic work and find out the broader aspects, combining areas such as electronics and hardware-software, to find out which area interests me the most. Eventually, I discovered that my main interest is electronics, including computer applications such as computer networks, embedded systems, and IoT. With this vital addition to my studies, I was one step closer to my dream.
The USA is a popular destination for higher studies for students worldwide. It offers you incredible and rich educational quality and helps you churn your skills and knowledge to the best. A degree you gain from a USA university will be recognized internationally by universities, employers, and government bodies, earning me a more advantageous position to acquire my dream goals. The universities provide an enriching course with top educational services, outstanding relations with several projects, and realistic teaching opportunities. More than anything, the infusion of races, cultures, and traditions will also enhance my personality and make me more competent. So, my wish to pursue Masters in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the [UNIVERSITY] from the USA seemed imperative and an ardent requisite.
When I finish my Master's Degree, I plan to return to my native country and pursue possibilities in the sector. I would particularly want to work in a managerial capacity, assuming the role of a technical executive at one of the major firms. I can help my business by leveraging my work expertise and freshly obtained academic knowledge. True enjoyment in information gain, in my opinion, comes from putting it into practice. A profession in this field would provide me with intellectual independence and the potential to innovate. A decade ago, I imagined working with a research team, developing futuristic technology.
In conclusion, I would like to mention that the essence of education lies in the synergetic relationship between the student and his department. I feel that study at your college will be the best logical extension of my academic pursuits and a major step towards achieving various skills and objectives. I would be grateful to you if I were accorded with an opportunity to pursue my higher studies along with some financial assistance at your esteemed institution. I confidently vouch to make the best use of the opportunity conferred upon me.
Thank you.
