SOP Sample for MS Data Analytics in the US - Early Career Profile

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

In reminiscence, analytical reasoning has been a subject of curiosity since my adolescent days. The appeal of finding solutions from several predefined conditions inspired the intent to dive deep into this field of study. The first memory of exploring the various facets of data occurred through my interest in analyzing trends of the financial (stock market) indicators such as candlestick charts and medians of various companies' financial reports. The intent of exploration soon turned into obsession as the multidimensional nature of data made discovering the underlying trends and patterns interesting; with some predictions playing out in the real financial markets awe-inspiring.

To further this interest in analyzing trends within data, I chose a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Information Sciences and Engineering from [UNIVERSITY_NAME], [CITY]. During the years of my undergraduate course, one of my favorite subjects was Design and Analysis of Algorithms. In this subject, I learnt how different algorithms function and was introduced to fundamental data structures. I also found interest in studying Big Data Analytics in my final semester; wherein I understood data architecture, data mining, data visualization, data processing tools, and the different algorithms used along with their purpose. Through personal research on these topics, I developed a stronghold around my analytic interests and garnered intent to pursue further studies in Data Analytics.

As most college projects mimic real-world scenarios, mine were no different. One of the most noteworthy projects was "Predicting Taxi Demand using Machine Learning and Data Science" in my final semester. The objective of this project was to predict the accuracy of algorithms used in taxi demand predictions. For this study, six models were tested and the best accuracy among them was determined. The process included data mining, data cleaning, clustering data, and making predictions using machine learning models, which in turn helped me get insights into their intricacies. This study was published in an edition of the renowned '[JOURNAL_NAME]' (e-ISSN 2395-0056). This whole learning experience helped me reinforce my choice of pursuing a Master's Degree in Data Analytics.

Another prominent learning opportunity was my project work on Database Management System (DBMS) which focused on creating a fully-operational website for a car rental company. Through this project, my skills at programming languages like SQL, HTML, and CSS sharpened for both backend and frontend development of the website.

In terms of work experience, my initial contact with the corporate world occurred through my internship in the sixth semester. I was among the few students at [UNIVERSITY_NAME] to work as an intern for the IoT Center of Excellence at the campus itself. The internship helped me hone my skills and prepare for employable roles. This internship required my efforts to fulfil the role of a web application developer; I served as a part of the ideation and development team for the campus management system, a tool which the academic institution used for its day to day functions. Here, I took charge of developing the data architecture, essentially building the necessary data repositories and weaving the intricate network within it to function efficiently. Through this internship, I gained substantial experience around individual contributions to live/production systems, as a glimpse of the real-world data scenario along with its inherent challenges, which made this internship a great learning experience.

Post the internships, I secured a campus placement at [COMPANY_NAME] in June 2020, which happens to be my current workplace, where I am currently serving as a Senior Compliance Associate. Post my training period and introduction to my core job role, I was given the opportunity to handle low complexity escalations where I carried out root cause analysis processes and supported the stakeholders in resolving various issues; a function which was assigned to me based on my performance and understanding of data structures. I also completed an internal course viz., 'Data at [COMPANY_NAME]' which dealt with data extraction and analysis on the [COMPANY_NAME] database. After completing this course, I was involved in several ad-hoc processes such as data extraction, data refining, data clustering, and work allocation with the team, based on resource availability. These processes helped in accelerating the workflow through automating certain functions and reduced the number of agent-touches to particular cases. As a recognition of my good work, I was awarded the rating 'Exceeds Expectation', which happens to be the highest level of appreciation at my current workplace.

Recognizing my thorough interest in the analytical field, I am keen on pursuing a master's degree in Data Analytics. I see it as a prospective channel for my future as a data analyst in the technological world. After completing my course, I plan to work for data-first companies and gain advanced expertise.

As the US is the most advanced nation in terms of higher education, I believe getting into [UNIVERSITY_NAME] will greatly benefit my educational pursuits. USA's technologically advanced education system is enough to prepare students for the latest developments in the field of software and data. Additionally, the globally acclaimed universities of the US will benefit me to secure higher designations in India or overseas in the future.
