STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

"The world of business is rewarding if you know how to turn the numbers in your favor." A statement that I heard in one of the college seminars struck an instant chord and has stuck with me ever since. Having an aspiration to leave an indelible mark in the business world, I have chosen my career path strategically to help me build a portfolio adept at analytical thinking. With the world of data dominating almost all segments and industries, business analytics is the ideal field that synchronizes well with my ultimate goals. I am applying for the MS Business Analytics program because I desire exceptional expertise in handling large data sets, statistical modeling, data optimization, and visualization. Acquiring these skills will help me make data-driven decisions using quantitative and statistical analysis. Also, the program allows me to create a unique value proposition for myself as the field demands extensive training and competence.

As a high school student, solving complex mathematical problems has been my favorite pastime, and this penchant for number crunching was the foremost reason for choosing engineering as my undergraduate major. My college years were insightful, as they helped me develop analytical thinking and taught me advanced mathematical skills. A project on "Porous Asphalt Pavements and Management" provided me with a chance to implement my love for the combination of mathematics and practical application of data to obtain the optimum design mix of asphalt, taking into account stakeholders' time, costs, and risk. Further, as an intern at [COMPANY_A], I gained profound insights into the nitty-gritty of construction businesses and their approaches to implementing data-driven strategies. Moreover, I also received the golden opportunity of interning at [COMPANY_B], where I realized how data insights could help make informed decisions for process efficiency.

In addition to academics, I have been very active in extracurricular activities. Being a core member of the sports committee in my college, I have represented my college in various intra-college activities such as cricket, kho-kho, and volleyball. I am also a proud recipient of completing the 10K marathon organized by [ORGANIZATION] at [CITY]. Sports have helped me imbibe leadership qualities, inculcating a never-die attitude that has become a part of my personality. Further, I ardently believe in giving back to society and have been involved in supporting different kinds of social causes. I have served as a coordinator and volunteer for [ORGANIZATION_A] alongside being a member of [ORGANIZATION_B]. Rounded with such great experiences, I completed my undergraduate studies, securing a gold medal in my department, all-ready to plunge into the corporate world.

Owing to my surging interest in the field of data analysis, I joined [COMPANY], a catastrophe modeling company, as a "Model QA Analyst-I". My work primarily involves understanding how catastrophes such as tropical cyclones and floods occur, how they can be modeled, and analyzing the loss estimates from such events. I have now stumbled upon a sweet spot of modeling and data analytics in relation to understanding catastrophic events, and this inquisitiveness drove me to become a Certified Extreme Event Modeler (CEEM). I promptly advanced to the Level-2 position in light of my exemplary work ethic. Now, I had a more strategic and analytical role, where I performed explicit and implicit validations for probabilistic models to ensure output reasonability. Also, I peered with my colleagues for brainstorming sessions and trained and led juniors in this position, which sharpened my leadership skills. These projects helped me gain proficiency in modeling, data analysis, and business intelligence, all of which will prove invaluable to me during the graduate coursework.

Intending to create a unique niche for myself in this field, I developed critical knowledge of implementing cloud initiatives in businesses and became a certified AWS Cloud Practitioner. My orientation towards learning and self-improvement has compelled me to take up various certifications from [PLATFORM] related to Data Science, Strategic Management, and Business Statistics, all of which amazed me with the significant dimensions they had to offer. With an urge to delve deeper into the subject, I understood that it was imperative to have a formal degree that would help me strengthen my concepts.

At this point in my career, I believe this would be the right time to enhance my skillsets with a master's degree to explore new possibilities in catastrophe modeling beyond my current proficiency. The highly accomplished faculty and course structure in MS Business Analytics makes [UNIVERSITY] a perfect fit for my future aspirations. Courses in Analytics and Business such as Business Data Visualization, Analytics for Big Data, Deep Learning and Modern Applications, and Risk Management are of particular interest to me. These courses will equip me with new skills that can complement my existing knowledge and expertise in catastrophe modeling and the insurance risk market, enhancing my ability to deliver exceptional services.

Aside from having the opportunity to collaborate with diverse peers, I am intrigued by initiatives like [INITIATIVE], which aim to develop students holistically. My perusal of [PROFESSOR_A]'s "Confidence in Predictions from Random Tree Ensembles" and [PROFESSOR_B]'s "Time-series segmentation: a model and a method" publications have convinced me that I would thrive in such a dynamic and active research cohort. As a firm believer in learning through practical problem-solving, this program would provide me with an excellent platform for advancing my career to the next level.

After my MS, pursuing a Ph.D. appeals to me. I intend my further studies to help me determine the focus areas that I feel most keen on researching further. Ultimately, my long-term goal is to leverage my skillsets, work, and continue to develop deep technical expertise in the area of catastrophe modeling both from a data analytics and business perspective.
