Sample SOP for MS in Computer Science in the UK
Sample SOP for master's in Computer Science at UK universities, tailored for early-career interdisciplinary applicants.
Statement of Purpose
I am an innately curious person, which has led me to question things and learn new concepts in the world of computer science. It has assisted me in staying up to date on industry trends. The senior architect in my team is someone I look up to for inspiration. Not only does she have a deep understanding of most on-going projects in the firm but her acute problem-solving skills to approach any situation has motivated me to follow her career path from being a good programmer to being a senior software architect in the long run. I feel it is imperative for me to attain my master's degree in computing as it will help me in achieving my goal of creating my own niche in the industry.
I graduated with a Bachelor of Technology degree with a cumulative GPA of 8.89 from [UNIVERSITY], which is one of the notable institutions in India. My academic proficiency earned me the "award of excellence". As I have always been inclined to work in the dry labs over wet labs, in my academic days, I completed my final year internship in the field of bioinformatics. In the project, I used data mining, which is in the field of Computing. The project titled Data mining of genes in type-2 diabetes-associated complications employed a hybrid approach that combines automated text mining with manual curation of genes associated with T2DM complications. [DATABASE_NAME] is currently the only repository that contains all of the information about the genes involved in T2DM and its complications. By regularly maintaining and updating this portal, we can detect various complications in their early stages and significantly reduce fatalities caused by diabetes. I identified sixteen new genes that resulted in T2DM complications, primarily Diabetic Retinopathy, Diabetic Neuropathy and Diabetic Nephropathy in two phases.
In addition, I conducted a case study of 200 Indian paddy-field workers using Recurrence Quantification Analysis on HRV signals to understand how Bhang (a cannabis derivative) consumption affects autonomic nervous system functions. This project used machine learning and was based on the analysis of ECG signals to determine the effect of cannabis consumption on the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) and cardiac physiology of Indian men working in paddy fields. The effect on ANS was calculated using [SOFTWARE] software and non-invasive heart rate variability (HRV) analysis. This research comparing the HRV Time-Series Signals Acquired from Cannabis Consuming and Non-Consuming Indian Paddy-Field Workers by Recurrence Quantification Analysis was published in the [JOURNAL_NAME], DOI: [DOI].
My journey, from wanting to be a medical practitioner (NEET aspirant) to becoming a java developer has been laden with challenges at each step. I had just graduated from school and my biology teacher convinced my parents, and they were aware that I would take a break year and try to crack the extremely competitive exam; the decision was mutual. Following my boards, I enrolled in a preparatory course for two years, and at the same time I was also enrolled in a government college for a zoology course for a certificate to avoid a drop term in my academic record and to begin preparing for the NEET and AIIMS.
After a few weeks, I realized that 12th grade preparation is comparatively lot easier in comparison to competitive-level examinations. Despite my best efforts, however, I was unable to obtain admission into a well ranked government medical school in my state due to intense competition and a high cut-off score. Deep down, I wanted to explore other fields, more so, engineering, so I applied for Joint Entrance Exam (JEE), an incredibly competitive level exam and was accepted into [UNIVERSITY], which is one of the most reputed universities. I decided to study biomedical engineering, a field that lies at the intersection of medical and engineering paths. After I discovered my interest for programming through my seniors, I started to explore the field further.
I went through a tough phase of teaching myself computer programming. In my first year of college, I took computer courses like C and data structures and in my second year, I interned in the fields of image and signal processing which taught me the use of tools like python language and Matlab. I completed additional internships in clinical data management using SAAS software, which I managed to learn in the space of a month, and I completed my final year internship in the field of bioinformatics. My internships were the main reason I was able to break into a tech firm, even with a non-tech background, where I was recruited for the Senior Member Technical position. I have been working as a Java developer since then. I have worked on two client based projects. Out of which, one resulted in terminated client off-boarding; more than 300 clients were able to self-serve and download 1500 reports that previously would have been emailed. In addition, the other one helped automate some tasks for improved productivity.
The university in United Kingdom is highly ranked and well-known for providing excellent education as well as cutting-edge facilities that aid in experiential learning. As a student, I will get the opportunity to learn from the world's leading academics and experts. Obtaining a master's degree would not only provide me with areas of expertise but would also allow me to be a part of a vibrant culture and intellectual atmosphere. I believe that being a part of the university's vibrant, diverse, and supportive environment will assist me in recognizing my potential and progressing me closer to my goals.
Aside from academics, I have a strong desire for social service. I was a member of the [ORGANIZATION]'s official chapter. My main contribution was the organization of the Impulse 2.0 event and blood donation camp. I have also volunteered to teach elementary school students basic science. In addition, I was also a member of [ORGANIZATION], a social service club for underprivileged children. My experience has taught me how to be non-judgmental, how to demonstrate empathy, and how my improbable journey can inspire others. My interests include dancing, singing, painting, and sketching. In addition, I enjoy reading novels in my leisure hours.
Despite the fact that I don't hold a degree in the field of computing, I believe that the university will facilitate in shaping my career to achieve my goals. I want to expand my knowledge of programming, technology, programming languages, and machine learning. Following a review of the program website, I decided to pursue my Master's degree at this university due to the curriculum's emphasis on theoretical and practical learning. I am confident that I have the necessary skills and knowledge required to succeed in your program. Being the first female generation of my family to pursue masters, I am confident that I would seize the economic opportunity and raise awareness against lack of female representation in the critical field of coding. My community goal is to give a talk at a meet-up, conference, or event about a technical topic I am passionate about. I deeply believe that the excellence of your program, along with my capabilities and motivation, will help me to attain my destination.
