Sample SOP for MS in Computer Science in Canada
Sample SOP for master's in Computer Science focusing on cloud computing for early-career specialists applying to Canadian universities.
Statement of Intent
To extend my knowledge in science and technology, I pursued my undergraduate program in Computer Science and Engineering. I found my interest is in cloud computing; to be more specific, container-based cloud computing alongside security and networking related to computational systems. I am looking forward to learning and researching more on computations, systems, data and programming. I am also intrigued by quantum computing and its possibilities.
In the future, I would like to explore and research different aspects of computing technologies and contribute impactful development to the same. My main career goal is to join a highly passionate team or organization and be a part of the development happening in the IT world by designing mission-critical tech to have a large-scale positive influence.
During my bachelor's degree, I have learnt a lot about the basics of different computer technology. In my 6th semester, the course on cloud technology was fascinating to study. That enthusiasm motivated me to take up certifications. I am an AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner as I have completed the Amazon Web service exam (CLF-C01). I also bag IBM cloud certification that makes me an IBM Certified Advocate.
I did my final year project in Kubernetes orchestrated function as a service which will serve as a base for IoT devices to help hyper-localize the computing to achieve reduced latency. The reason to take up this project was after facing a problem of my own when I automated different parts of my house through IoT devices and virtual assistants; One very prominent concern was the delay between my action and the event execution.
I was the leader of the [ORGANIZATION] student club consisting of 35 students, where we conducted different workshops, competitions for our juniors and within the club members. This club aided in creating lasting relationships and a sense of community where we helped each other grow. I often enjoy sharing my knowledge and findings with my peers. I have developed public speaking skills to reach a broader audience. I wrote technical blogs for [PLATFORM], mainly on DevOps and Cloud-related advanced guides and topics. My blogs have been published in different [PLATFORM] publications. I have also been uploading youtube videos explaining various technologies.
Parallelly, I received a remote internship from a Canadian company called [COMPANY] ([COMPANY]). The company is involved in research on container technology. I explored the world of containerization, virtualization and other Linux concepts. During those eight months, I took the lead to create proof-of-concept work, to have a firm understanding of operating systems, security and networking.
Apart from the internships and projects that were a part of the curriculum, I was active in other extracurricular activities. My team and I participated in [HACKATHON] 2019 and designed a brand new Flightpath prediction mapper. Our design was declared the winner, and we won a grand prize of one lakh rupees. I have taken part in some of the biggest college fests and events throughout this time. I was awarded the first prize at [UNIVERSITY] [HACKATHON] 2020 for creating an indoor AR navigation system for mobile devices. We participated in [HACKATHON] by [UNIVERSITY], where we worked on a decentralized medical record API, and our efforts paid off as we got the second position in this competition. At [HACKATHON], we designed a Whatsapp AI bot to communicate secure banking information. Being part of these exciting activities has helped me work on my interpersonal, time management, leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills efficiently. It has allowed me to develop a winning mentality that has stayed with me even today.
After graduation, I started working in [COMPANY] - IBM Cloud team as Associate Engineer. The assigned projects aligned with my interest and expertise, namely Kubernetes and other container-based cloud technologies.
Previously, I have enrolled myself in a few courses offered by [UNIVERSITY] through the [PLATFORM] online learning portal. It was of great help in advancing my knowledge of object-oriented design and other exciting topics. The Professors who took those courses were articulate and effective in teaching complex topics. I would be privileged to work and learn from such talented faculty. The more I learn, the more I realize how much there is to know. In my masters, I am looking to learn more comprehensively about architecture, algorithms, protocols and other theories.
During my Canadian internship, I enjoyed the culture and technological development happening at the very moment in Canada. I have also noticed the trend of technology clusters developing in British Columbia. This Master's degree program will surely help me get a better idea of the various aspects of computer science and relevant technology. I wish to acquire the essential skills for making a mark in this highly competitive industry. The [UNIVERSITY] is one of the best institutions in Canada that is well-known for its courses in Computer Science. They have invested in state-of-the-art laboratories and high-tech workshop centers. All of these will help me move closer to my dreams and build a successful career in computer science. Furthermore, their faculty has the best professors and industry experts under whose guidance my career will take off.
