Statement of Purpose

Working on novel projects excites us all, and it was my third year of undergraduate degree when I started working on an experiment of my own. I was always fond of the way automobiles functioned, and my bachelor's in mechanical helped me get adept in the basics of it. Moreover, I've always had a knack to dig deeper into the intricacies of a subject, so from further research, I got to know how a major part of the thermal energy produced by fuels in engines and turbines gets wasted away due to irreversible losses. This sparked a light in me to improve the overall efficiency of the heat engines and work in this field for the time being.

Further, I like to stay updated with the new technological advancements happening around the globe, and hence I got to know about the implications of newly developed nanofluids, particularly ferrofluids in several space and medical sectors. Going through some research papers, I recollected that some ferrofluids can act as an excellent medium of heat transfer, along with showing remarkable magnetic properties. Thus began my tremendous journey of studying, fabricating, designing, and experimenting with everything I could lay my hands on; and it soon became clear that I needed a higher level of expertise to make even better and significant contributions to society.

The Thermo fluid sciences program at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, [UNIVERSITY_NAME] seems well suited to me and my goal, to learn and explore the world of heat transfer and its mechanism, along with working on improving all the aspects of the field I can contribute to. My interest in the field peaked while working on my undergraduate project, and have been since involved in research work in several areas like Heat Exchangers, IC Engines, Ferro-fluids, Computational fluid dynamics, etc., and having worked on ANSYS, Solidworks, Matlab, etc. gave me an even better understanding of the theoretical parts that I've learned in my college time and hence getting me more and more excited in this line of studies. Other than that, in later walks of my life, I wish to explore more in the thermal and aerodynamics sector of space science and technology, and the courses along with the topics covered in the above-mentioned program will cover all the information I need to gather for that.

Knowing the field of science is as vast as the cosmos itself, and there are myriads of challenges faced every day by scientists; I believe that my research experience and in-depth knowledge of technical and computational aspects of the subject will help me overcome all the adversities.

A major milestone in my research career has been the final year project titled, "Efficiency Enhancement and scope of Energy Regeneration in Heat Exchangers using Ferrofluid and Inserts", that I have worked on along with my teammates for the completion of my bachelor's degree. The goal was to simulate two nuances to increase the efficiency of the modeled heat exchanger by combining two passive enhancement techniques i.e., Nano Additives and Swirl Flow method, which was done using ANSYS and SOLIDWORKS. Further, to reciprocate the results for industrial purposes, we moved on to the experimental analysis, where we are currently setting up the circuit to obtain and analyze the data produced. In the meantime, we faced and overcame several obstacles, ranging from the non-availability of the right equipment to difficulties in fabricating the ferrofluids.

Other than that, I have undergone an internship in the Manufacturing Department of the [COMPANY_NAME]. I was appointed as a Trainee under an Executive Engineer, overseeing the production line and maintenance department. There, I understood the modus operandi of procuring sugarcanes from various farms, unloading it in the mill, extracting juice from shredded cane pieces in the extraction unit, cooling the juice and crystallizing into fine sugar crystals processing canes into sugar crystals, and finally packing and delivering the packages to various godowns and wholesalers. Moreover, I got adept knowledge of the equipment used in the processes such as milling tandem, crushers, etc. used to cut the canes and then further crushing them into small pieces for crystal formation. Also derived the understanding of post-production usage of waste through the Boiler to generate electricity which is further distributed to nearby towns and also helps to power the sugar mill.

Apart from this, to properly employ my skills along with a hint of fun, I took part in several minor projects and competitions in my school and college life. I was always enthusiastic about participating in debates, quizzes, and science projects in my schooling days, and was always gratified by meeting new people and making friends along the way. When I was a sophomore in college, I joined the official society of the Mechanical Department, in which I was assigned the student head for planning, conducting, and monitoring the events and activities for students of the first year. In the second year, I along with some seniors founded the Aeromodelling club of our institute, which I finally headed as the captain in my final year. In the meantime, my teams participated in several national-level competitions in prestigious institutes like [INSTITUTE_NAME_1], [INSTITUTE_NAME_2], and [INSTITUTE_NAME_3]; in which we stood at par with the best teams from all over the country, and were appreciated for the level of diligence shown as the underdogs. I further made two new inclusions to the existing arsenal of our team, with a hovercraft and a quadcopter.

The MS program at your esteemed university will play a crucial role in building up to my professional destination, with both academic and social exposure that I would be getting at the campus. Moreover, learning and involving myself in the extensive research opportunities would allow me to hone my skills even further and reach ever towering heights in my career coming out of the university. The will to do something new is what gets me out of bed every day, and I believe [UNIVERSITY_NAME] will be a perfect ground for me to spend the next 2 years of my master's education, learning and enjoying the experience with every bit of motivation.
