Statement of Purpose
With a zeal to achieve proficiency in Robotics, I would like to pursue my graduate studies at [UNIVERSITY_1] and believe that this prestigious institution and the program will help me hone my skills to achieve my potential as a product development engineer. I have always had a keen interest in physics and biology since my early school years. This interest in the core sciences grew when I met one of my uncles who is a scientist in my third grade. Ever since meeting him, my fascination for all things "mechanical" and engineering began. This interest in the sciences led me to participate in various science exhibitions, demonstrating great performance. In the 11th standard, my project on Environmental Pollution and Solutions to Reduce Carbon Footprint was selected for representing my school at the [STATE_1] state level, where my team stood 4th amongst all the participants and was appreciated by various members of the faculty and panel of judges.
To pursue my interest in physical product development, I took up Mechanical Engineering as a major during my undergraduate studies. Taking up courses such as Structural Mechanics, Theory of Machines and Fluid Mechanics helped create a strong fundamental understanding of physical and functional requirements of numerous products as well as product development processes. My passion for gaining an in-depth understanding of mechanical engineering motivated me to attend workshops at various universities, auditing online courses, self-learn Arduino technologies, and Computer-Aided Design/Engineering courses, and I would take up any opportunity to do this during summer breaks of under-graduation days. To develop a better understanding of industrial production, I did an internship with [COMPANY_1], a renowned bearing manufacturer, and gained insight into manufacturing processes and tasks involved in running a production unit. My graduation project on "Testing CI Engine Performance for Various Bio-Fuel Mixtures" led me to develop better insight into topics like material synthesis, i.e., esterification of cottonseed oil, physical test bench setup, and we were able to identify possible diesel biofuel mixture ratios which will reduce the reliance on fossil fuels.
In my endeavor of becoming a good product development engineer, I joined [COMPANY_2] and was employed as a CAE engineer with job responsibilities involving critical design thinking, problem-solving, and performing simulations of various industry components for MNCs in automotive, home appliances, and health care. Spending over three years with an amazing team helped in getting a deeper fundamental understanding of complex topics like non-linear material simulations, linear dynamics and noise vibration harshness analysis, 2-Way FSI, and APDL/Python scripting for automating repeated tasks. My work in these projects was well received and appreciated by clients and immediate supervisors. Soon after, I was promoted to the role of an Application Engineer with the responsibility of handling key client accounts which included developing and supporting clients with new simulation workflows and existing queries.
In May 2019, I joined [COMPANY_3] where I was exposed to the intricacies involved in product development right from design to final prototyping and then mass production. My work in simulation and optimization of pumps for improved efficiencies under critical constraints using Python scripting and AI/ML-based optimizer earned much appreciation. With this experience, I was given the opportunity to work with a group of pump specialists at the customer site. One year after joining [COMPANY_3], I was made the head of the design and development team leading a team of 4 members working on the development of critical automotive and biomedical systems. In this position, I also developed collaboration with several next-generation product development start-ups to help solve critical problems in various design and development areas like composites, dynamics as well as the implementation of topology optimization for additive manufacturing. I believe that my professional experience has been crucial in helping me explore the depth involved in designing and developing critical systems from conception to final manufacturing.
To further broaden my knowledge and explore robotics product development in-depth, I wanted to extend my application for the Masters in Mechanical Engineering program at [UNIVERSITY_1] with a concentration in Dynamics and Control. Furthermore, my keen sense of understanding of critical theory and practical experience gained throughout my professional experience makes me a great candidate for this course. Given an opportunity, my short-term goal would be to achieve competency in different aspects of Robotics, working under seasoned professors on cutting-edge technologies like autonomous robotics, dynamics and control systems, and bio-inspired systems.
