Statement of Purpose
Growing up, I was exposed to the transformation and development of [CITY], the satellite city I reside in, near [CITY]. Observing the growth of these two cities, I realised that they lay in discordance with each other, progressing in their own ways and in their own time, building together but with their own taste. This fascinated me to a point where I decided to educate myself about the construction industry, and pursued Bachelor's in Architecture. My interest in this field also stems from my family. My father and brother, both being civil engineers, and my sister being an interior designer, I have an understanding of planning and executing various projects of different scales. I am certain that advancing my knowledge base by way of a master's program will catalyse my professional performance, and am interested in enrolling in your prestigious postgraduate program, MS Construction Management, for my higher studies.
I am a graduate of [UNIVERSITY], affiliated with [UNIVERSITY]. My five-year undergraduate program weighed theoretical and practical knowledge equally. Studying construction-related subjects, that were more practical, such as, Construction Building Technology, Professional Practice, Estimation, and Costing, was highly enjoyable for me. In the curriculum, I was exposed to the diversity of the construction sector through frequent site visits and site surveys. Moreover, I gained an understanding of the importance of building technologies and developed a keen interest in Building Information Modelling. I subsequently completed a certification course, in 2020, in the application of BIM and was exposed to the dynamic approach required in construction processes, that allows me to understand newer developments that the industry is offering.
My role as Exhibition and Seminar Head in the college council was an eye-opener, to the intensity of work, necessary to execute an exhibition. Working with a group of 20 people required my understanding of the various stages of collaboration, building a network, and communicating, all necessary to solidify the exhibition. Moreover, participating in the [COUNTRY]-[CITY] Student Exchange Workshop allowed me to collaborate with international students, learn new working patterns, and enhance my communication skills accordingly.
During my internship, in my 4th year, I had the opportunity to see what the construction industry holds and how I could use my skills in a professional environment. There, I worked on large-scale residential and commercial projects, as well as interior projects for high-profile clients. Additionally to the scope of work, I developed feasibility drawings and reports for residential complexes to evaluate the viability of the projects. While the task was challenging at first, it strengthened my command over the projects and provided valuable insight into my responsibilities before the project began.
In developing my thesis, during my final year, on the topic of "Science Park", I researched on sustainable options for building Bio-domes and came across an option known as ETFE Plastic, a lightweight material used to replace glass, in Biodomes to maintain the micro-climate within. Reducing the amount of steel used in construction by using ETFE Plastic, drastically reduced the construction costs. As a result, I became increasingly interested in surveying the market and understanding how sustainability and cost management influence projects.
Currently, working full time as a junior architect in [COMPANY], [CITY], my job responsibilities include resolving design conflicts by providing practical solutions, as well as coordinating work between architects, MEP consultants, structural consultant and 3D visualisers. My experience includes working on a large-scale residential project for the defence forces. Having experienced the working of large-scale projects, I was drawn to the managerial aspects of the construction industry.
Over and above my career as an architect, I am a co-founder of a company named [COMPANY], a digital media start-up that promotes Art and Architecture. As we are a fairly new company, we have a diverse range of clients, requiring work of varying nature and of various scales. Our company works with a large network of people, so, I am required to take on multiple roles, to support our growth. Being the sole manager has been very laborious, but also something that I thoroughly enjoy.
In addition to being home to some of the best universities in the world, the United States of America has a multi-cultural environment that effectively promotes the range of skills required in the global workforce. The growing nature of the construction industry in the USA, promises an increase in the scope for management, along with technological advancements, making it an ideal setting for me to pursue further education. My mission is to contribute to an industry that provides efficient solutions, enhances affordability, is ecologically friendly, and assists in promoting a healthy lifestyle. With the broad exposure offered by the USA, in terms of education and industry expertise, I strongly believe that I can accomplish my goals fully and interdisciplinarily.
[UNIVERSITY] offers a program structure that will heighten my knowledge about the field. The Main campus, gives me an insight into the culture therein, which is also of keen interest to me. Making the most of the opportunity to connect with a diverse group of people, I hope to enhance my lifestyle holistically.
The three traits that define me are diligent, dynamic, and good organization. Given the structure that the program provides, I believe I would be able to chisel myself into becoming a significant contributor in the construction industry. In every way possible, I intend to outperform the academic and extra-curricular expectations, the university holds high. I would be obliged to be considered for a place in your prestigious university, and I am excited to be a member of this institution.
