STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
[APPLICANT NAME] Masters of Regulatory Affairs
Having completed my four-year Bachelor of Pharmacy degree successfully in 2021 from [UNIVERSITY NAME], [UNIVERSITY NAME], India, I realize how valuable, amazing, challenging and thrilling an experience it was since 2017! It was not just a training for a rewarding career, but also the journey of professional life I chose to walk. With many healthcare challenges and morbidities still in our nation and around the globe, I am hopeful that my training, knowledge, role and hard work will enable me to make innovative, safe and high quality pharmaceutical products affordable and easily accessible and improve the lives of people directly or indirectly through my service in this field.
To describe in short the story of my calling to pursue pharmacy as my profession, initially I decided to study Pharmacy because my subject interests especially aligned with the courses taught in the B.Pharm program. When I was a high school student, I loved reading books, magazines and newspaper articles related to health, chemistry and biology. During those days, I happened to glance through a random news report on aspirin as a wonder drug. I was fascinated on learning that this simple molecule from the willow bark that is therapeutically used to treat pain, inflammatory conditions and prevent blood clots in cardiovascular diseases, may also help prevent cancer according to recent findings. I wondered whether this research could translate into meaningful treatment. I have a compassion for people that further instilled in me the desire to use my life and education to help improving community health. This lead me to particularly choose to study pharmacy, as the program is a combination of a variety of courses such as Pharmacy Practice, Physiology, pharmacotherapy, pharmacology, Pharmaceutics and Industrial Pharmacy, pharmaceutical analysis and mathematics. I am very grateful for the opportunity to have learned the foundation I needed to pursue a career in pharmacy field. As part of my four years of college, I visited a few industries to see how the quality analysis is done, and I realized that quality is directly proportional to its efficacy. In light of this experience, I became interested in researching how regulations and control can help ensure the potency of drugs. I plan to pursue a career in regulatory affairs in the future, and pursuing the Pharmaceutical Regulatory Affairs program at [UNIVERSITY NAME] will help me clarify the basic principles.
As part of my final year in the B.Pharm program, I explored several different types of alternative medicine on a review project. Together with my fellow group members, I devised the study plan and compiled a report in a structured manner detailing the safety and usefulness of many of these practices. I developed my skills in researching a topic, analyzing data, preparing presentations, and writing reports through this project. Through this project I concluded that people prefer the Ayurvedic Medicine system over others because they believe it to be safer and more effective. However, the one issue that remains is that it is not regulated. So, I wish to propose regulations to ayurvedic medicine so that we can get better drugs.
During my second year at [UNIVERSITY NAME], I worked with classmates on a parallel synthesizer model for the [UNIVERSITY NAME] model-making contest. It was a thrilling design that visualized the process of screening lead molecules, an important stage in drug discovery. It was an enjoyable teamwork experience that helped me gain interpersonal skills and gain an understanding of how parallel synthesizers are used in combinatorial chemistry, as well as synthesis optimization. As a student, I have gained insight into the synthesis of simple drug molecules in the laboratory, how aseptic conditions are met, how the sterility of products is assessed, and how the nature of pharmaceutical preparations affects the manufacturing process. I participated in laboratory work either individually or collaboratively in experiments such as dissolution testing, thin layer chromatography, and spectroscopic evaluation of drug concentrations.
Following graduation, I was an intern at [COMPANY NAME] in Maharashtra, India, from April 2021 to July 2021. My training included learning about the various roles within the laboratory and learning about the principles of haematology and biochemistry from pathologists. During my internship, I gained extensive experience in handling and collecting blood specimens, managing/storing biological specimens, maintaining accurate results in a database, and being capable of handling equipment such as sampling analyzers, centrifugal machines, SYSMEX KX21 complete blood counters, and ERBA biochemical analyzers. I learned how to test for blood glucose, lipid profiles, blood group analysis, and complete blood counts. Consequently, I had the chance to become more involved in health screening and disease diagnostic testing under a quality standard. I also acquired new concepts and skills, learned how to interpret test results, and the impact of tests on treatment decision-making. It was through this experience that I realized pharmacists play a unique role in public health promotion.
In August 2021, I joined "[COMPANY NAME]" as an associate pharmacist for their online pharmacy and medical store in India. I am a registered pharmacist with the [STATE COUNCIL NAME], [CITY NAME]. As a pharmacist at an online pharmacy, I fill prescriptions, verify that prescriptions are accurate, assess for possible drug interactions, counsel patients on appropriate medication use, and maintain computerized records of prescriptions dispensed in the past.
In light of my educational background, the knowledge, training, and experiences I gained so far, I believe I have identified the right niche for me to move forward in my professional endeavors. I am now eager to return to academic life for the next few years of pursuit of knowledge. Specifically, I am interested in regulating the quality of drugs and foods produced. It is a noble field in which I can make a positive difference to the lives of people by improving the efficiency and effectiveness of drugs and medical devices. As I have chosen to apply to the Master's program in Pharmaceutical Regulatory Affairs at [UNIVERSITY NAME], my goal is to study and become a professional in this area.
