STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
India is popularly known to be a multi-diverse country. As you cross from one district to another here, you will come across a variety of languages with innumerable dialects in them. Since childhood, I have been exposed to a wide range of people, cultures and ethnicities because of the category of profession my father was involved in. I was a South Indian girl, living in North India, shifting and settling down from one city to the other quite often. Nevertheless, one thing that constantly fascinated me about this country is that, it is so rich with such varied traditions and cultures and yet people were still able to communicate with each other.
The fascination for communication combined with my inquisitiveness for this phenomenon made me pursue my Masters in Communication from a prestigious college in [CITY]. Here, I got the opportunity to interact with people from around the globe and a chance to understand media and communication from a global perspective. The two years gave me the exposure to theoretical and practical methodologies that help disseminate the right information to the right audience. The programme broadened my understanding of the field of communication and made me a responsible media person.
Soon after completing my M.A. Communication from [UNIVERSITY], I worked as a Lecturer in [UNIVERSITY], teaching the subjects like – Introduction to Communication, Advertising and Media Aesthetics. As a lecturer, I exercised and sharpened my capacity for original thought and the ability to organize workload within competing demands. I also discovered my confidence in dealing with a range of people, the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team.
Later, as I felt the need for a practical exposure to the media industry, I joined the [INSTITUTION] to pursue PG Diploma Course in Broadcast Journalism. My creative communication, and audio-video production skills were enhanced here and made me a better communicator. I have also been able to ideate and script various studio programmes and news-stories in the form of on-air news bulletins and execute it effectively as a team player as well as individually. This course also moulded me to sensitise citizens to social concerns thereby creating bigger mind-space for people of the global village.
My journey took me to [ORGANIZATION], where I have been working as a Communication Associate for the past two and a half years. This role has endowed me with the responsibility of providing quality communication resources (especially videos) to meet fundraising, donor retention, reporting and branding requirements for the organization. Additionally, I also pitch in story ideas for social media posts and campaigns. As part of the job, I get to practice my journalistic skills and travel to different parts of India (something which I love to do). I get to interact with a variety of people and help them share their stories to the world. Even though COVID-19 has brought in several restrictions and precautionary measures, I have managed to keep up with the limited resources to get our projects done effectively.
We all have witnessed the brunt of the pandemic in one way or the other. The coronavirus outbreak has caused widespread concern and economic hardship for individuals, communities, consumers and businesses across the globe. While the media industry may be among one of the hardest hit by COVID-19 crisis, it is also the one humanity is still relying on for crucial up-to-date information. The media industry has shown the ability to keep afloat by the rising demand for information and communication, during the recovery period. To overcome the current challenges, I believe it is important to keep up with current media practices and prepare myself with essential skills that will help me become a better communicator.
I am confident that through MA in Intercultural Business Communication programme, I will be able to accomplish my aim to gather an in-depth understanding of media management and marketing skills that are vital to engage with the current media setting. Along with managerial skills, I am interested in acquiring a broad range of work-related skills such as planning, negotiation, budgeting, organizing, reporting, team-work, problem-solving and leadership skills. I also aim to better my communication skills in written, verbal and visual forms. I want to practice my learning from this course as a professional, gather strong leadership qualities and have the ability to manage change and promote innovation and creativity.
Former President of India [NAME] once said, "All of us don't have equal talent. But all of us have an equal opportunity to develop our talent." For me, this course in [UNIVERSITY] is that opportunity. It will help me enhance my passion for communication, and shape my personality with skills to become a media manager which would also maximise my employment potential. I sincerely want to focus on gaining more experience that can help me be flexible and adapt the learnings to changes in the society.
Sincerely, [NAME]
